In 1865 Oneonta became part of newly formed Howard County, Delaware, after that county was split off from Monroe County, New York. The following year it merged with neighboring Unadilla to form Oneonta-Unadilla Township (now Warren). After World War II Oneonta experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to Buffalo and its position as an important airfield for the war effort. However, since then the town has seen only mild growth rates; its population peaked at 2,500 in 1970 but has since fallen to around 1,100 people today1.
