From the Revolutionary War to the present day, there have been a variety of guns and targets available for shooting in Oneonta. The area was originally inhabited by the Mohawk people, and they used their spears, arrows, and dogs to hunt game. In 1755, English colonists arrived in Oneonta and began to settle the area. They built a fortification known as Fort George on the site of what is now the Main Street School District. The British were able to control this fort until 1802 when they withdrew from New York. After American independence was gained in 1776, many Americans begun moving westward into Canada. Some of these pioneers went into business in Oneonta; some opened stores and others started farms. By 1800, there were about 10 businesses in town with a total population of around 100 people. However, during this time period gun fire wasn’t common among these people due to fear that it would spark an open conflict with the British government which still controlled Canada at that time. Oneonta slowly became known as a center for target shooting due to its natural beauty and easy access to ammunition supplies. By 1868, there were over 50 businesses operating here with 2200 residents living within commuting distance of Oneonta City Hall (now called downtown). This growth led to increased demand for space inside city limits as well as for more efficient storage facilities outside of town limits. As businesses grew larger, so too did their need for targets; however, none could match the popularity enjoyed by local shooters during World War II when Target acquired exclusive rights from Winchester Ammunition Company to market all types of air-burst or incendiary rounds through its outlets throughout New York state (and ultimately across all US combat zones). Oneonta, New York is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 1,031 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario and it straddles the border of Oneonta and Sterling Heights. It is part of the Rochester–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Oneonta was first settled by Germans in 1795. In 1814 an act of Congress named Oneonta Township in Greene County after George Washington's father-in-law John Adams one of the original proprietors of what would become Rochester, New York. On February 15th, 1826, NY 27 passed through this township east to Clintontown and west to Poughkeepsie; so on March 4th Oneonta became a full township with a vote by President James K. Polk as to whether or not it should be divided into two townships for purposes of taxation: However Bushnell Mills mill started up in 1829 and soon there were many other mills in town which caused Oneonta to grow rapidly – even though they did not all have their own water powered turbines until 1912! In 1830 Charles Thomas set up his papermaking business in town – one year before America's first successful paper mill opened at Niagara Falls! Some key events during these years include: In 1835 Oneonta had its first post office open (named "Newport") when mail from Canada arrived via boat on the Buffalo River! On July 8th 1850 US 24 was constructed concurrent with NY 27 through this township from Sterling Heights east towards Ogdensburg; so finally residents could travel between Two Rivers and Oneonta without having to go through Clintontown! This helped adjust life for many people as travel along 24th Street gradually turned into Main Street today! In 1856 saw another important milestone when steamboats started running between Kingston and Buffalo across Lake Ontario! This made transportation much easier then trying to get goods down river each time! By 1870 main streets had been built throughout most of what is now ONEONTATownship including College Avenue which runs parallel to 24th Street today

Oneonta, New York is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Syracuse–Albany-Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot on what is now Oneonta Peninsula was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he and his party of Spaniards arrived from Italy. In 1614, Dutch settlers landed on the peninsula after being shipwrecked off Long Island. On October 18th of that year, Oneonta Village was organized as a town by an act of the Assembly with Town Meeting held on November 24th. On July 10th of 1785(), Anthony Wayne sold 350 acres (183 hectares) east of present-day Oneonta to James D’Angelo for $1,500 cash and two horses. This land became known as the `D'Angelo Purchase`. The village included all or most of what is now downtown Oneonta and most if not all of what is now north end Street and west side Avenue. In 1811 Daniel Webster purchased one acre (0.40 hectare) in front of present day First Baptist Church from John Loughran for $2 cash which he named Webster's Lakes after himself and his wife Elizabeth Loughran who had also contributed money for the purchase - this area became known as West Lakeland Park today. In 1861 Captain William Harkness built a sawmill on `West Lakeland Park` where it still operates today making lumber products available to local residents until 1985 when it closed down due to lack of customers during wartime shortages caused by World War II Germany blockade restrictions). It should be noted that prior to 1861 much land in central Iroquois County including present day Oneonta Township lay within Ulster County except for certain areas near modern Binghamton which were transferred into Erie County following annexation by Erie in 1837 which created Buffalo/Niagara Falls metropolitan area and then again via large grants from Andrew Johnson to Buffalo/Niagara Falls school district during Reconstruction creating villages like Allegany, Gibsonville, North Tonawanda etc.).
