Oneonta is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 1,631 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Town of Onondaga and was founded in 1792. Oneonta is one of four towns within the Onondaga County seat of Syracuse. The first European to visit Oneonta was Captain John Smith on September 12, 1792 while on his way from Syracuse to Albany. He named it after his hometown of Ontonagon in Michigan and described it as "an excellent place for a garrison". In 1800, Colonel George Washington made a summer home here and called it "Haven" or "Dove's Nest". The first post office opened here on July 24, 1802. In 1827, Oneonta became part of the newly created Onondaga County. A courthouse and jail were built around this time, but no school or social service were provided until after World War II when Oneonta-related projects such as an ambulance garage and fire hall began to grow rapidly. In 1949, Oneonta became home to its own independent bank which still operates today with over $200 million in assets under management! In 1978, much progress had been made towards revitalization efforts surrounding what would become known as "The Square", including construction of new housing units (the first being erected atop an old sawmill), retail space and even a movie theater - now closed but once again serving as an important community resource center Please see: https://www-oneontascityparksand Recreation website." In 1990s/2000s there has been significant redevelopment taking place downtown complete with new restaurants/bars/cafes etc., making Oneonta more active entertainment destination that caters to both locals and visitors alike! However despite some great strides made by our community over recent years there are still many challenges facing us including rising prices for goods & services overall (& especially rents), lacklustre schools (particularly for kids) & infrastructure problems; we MUST continue working together if we want our future to be anything like ours should be!"

The town is located on the border of Onondaga County and Ontario County, near Syracuse. Oneonta is known for its rich colonial history and its many historical sites, including the Oneonta Academy, which was built in 1821 as an academy for girls.
Oneonta is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. It is located on the border of Oneonta and Ramapo townships. The population was 6,708 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Ramapo-Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit the area now called Oneonta was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it Villa Giovanna because he found virgin trees there. In 1792, John Jay made an treaty with the Mohawk tribe at oneonta Creek and built a bridge over it to traders travelling between Canada and Albany via Monticello road. On October 27, 1792, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington's army burned down what remains of John Jay's Treaty House at Oneonta Creek after capturing nearby Fort Oswego on October 26th that same year from British forces under command of Lieutenant Colonel John Armstrong. In 1813-14 Major General Henry Dearborn destroyed two Iroquois villages near present day Onondaga Lake in order to open up this territory for white settlement as part of his policy known as "the Great Proclamation." The village of Tuscarora had been living near by since before then and had not participated in hostilities against America; however their land was confiscated by Dearborn along with all other Indian villages east of Ontario line that were considered hostile or warlike towards white settlers (thus including many present day Onondaga Lakes). Many Susquehannock people also sided with Patriot forces against Britain during the Revolution due to their fear that large numbers of British troops would come through their territory into theirs without asking first (and thus take away most or all their tribal lands). The Battle of Saratoga took place a few miles west of where Oneonta now stands on July 16th1777 which ended British efforts to retake New York from Continental Army led by General Burgoyne after they failed twice coup de tête against George Washington’s forces at Saratoga Racecourse outside Albany NY Oneonta Creek was renamed Hunterstown creek following rifleman Gabriel Hunter who fought in several battles during the American Revolution
