Oneonta was founded in 1792 by General Israel Putnam and his wife Susannah Putnam as a stopping place on the Genesee River between Albany and Utica. The name "Onondaga" was given to the creek that flows through the town. Oneonta became an agricultural center; its first store opened in 1854. In 1898, Oneonta became a city when it incorporated under the name of Syracuse. In 1951, Oneonta merged with neighboring village of East Aurora to form a single municipality with a population of over 2,000 people. The history of Oneonta began with General Israel Putnam's arrival from upstate America in 1792 during the revolutionary war era. Colonel John Montgomery served as putnams' interpreter and secretary until his death in 1795; he left behind two sons who would later lead their father's business ventures: Jonathan Putnam (1797-1855) and Ezekiel Putnam (1801-1859). With assistance from friend and neighbor James Caldwell (1775-1812), General Putnam started developing Onondaga Creek into an important trade route for central New York State due to its excellent irrigation systems. By 1800, however, development had stalled because there were no permanent residents or businesses willing to establish themselves along Onondaga Creek because of endemic Native American hostility towards white settlement; this period is known as "the Dark Ages".
