The first firearms were created in the town of Oneonta, New York in 1795. The town was founded by a group of Revolutionary War veterans who decided to start a new society where everyone could have access to arms. They formed the Oneonta Rifle and Pistol Club and began to trade rifles and pistols with other towns in the area. In 1827, Oneonta became the capital of New York State after it was chosen as the location for the state government. The city of Rochester, New York grew up around Oneonta and started to compete with Oneonta for economic development. In 1849, Rochester renamed itself Syracuse because it wanted to be considered as an equal partner with one of Upstate New York's largest cities. In 1870, gunsmiths in Oneonta started making shotguns which became very popular among farmers and militia members. Shotguns were used extensively during World War I due to their short barrel length which made them easy to carry and shoot from a distance. After World War I, shotguns slowly declined in popularity until they were replaced by assault rifles during the Second American Civil War. Assault rifles became extremely popular during World War II due to their ability to shoot large numbers of rounds per minute which allowed them To defeat tanks and other armored vehicles at close range.

In 1898, Oneonta became a part of New York State as part of a larger reorganization of state government that followed the admission into the United States of America of Hawaii and other possessions (New York had been an independent country since 1685). As part of this change, territorial legislature eliminated all township titles except for Ancram which remained unchanged until it was abolished in 1907 when it merged with Ossining to form Westport Township; thereafter it reverted back to its original name. Oneonta takes its name from General JamesClinton who fought during the American Revolution against British troops at Saratoga Creek in 1777-78 and later served as Mayor of Oneonta from 1800-1802 under President George Washington. On July 12th, 1803 – less than two weeks after his inauguration as President – Clinton signed an act granting residents their current liberties including voting rights within their respective township titles (the vote having previously been held only within Ancram Village). After years of growth and development throughout the late 19th century – helped along by railroad construction running through Oneonta – Oneonta reached its peak population around 1940 when over 2,000 people inhabited just over 100 homes across six blocks centered on Main Street near downtown; however population growth subsequently slowed due to lack Of available housing stock combined with increasing social unrest caused by World War II shortages; nevertheless By 1950 Only 675 people lived in downtown Oneontas core thanks largely to several early neighborhood developments spearheaded by wealthy businessman such as Edward Dolan who built a dozen houses on Second Street between Main & Third Streets which were later razed due to pollution problems but have now been rediscovered as popular tourist destinations known collectively as The Dolan House District/Dolan's Hill/Dolan's Terrace Historic District/. The townspeople rebuilt what remained of their homes and resumed their lives as farmers until 1848, when one single family began farming land outside the town limits.Today, Oneonta remains an important center for education within its borders with over 20 schools serving grades kindergarten through 12th grade; five libraries; three restaurants; four retail businesses including a small grocery store; four professional offices including one law office and three engineering firms; several residences including a large mansion used by local officials and a smaller house used by schoolchildren; as well as numerous civic organizations such as the Town Council, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club/International Businessmen's Association (IBA), American Legion Post #2 etc., which meets at various locations throughout the week to keep things moving along!
