Oneonta was a small town in the Catskills region of New York. It was located on the south bank of the Hudson River, about 17 miles (27 km) east of Kingston and 12 miles (19 km) west of Oneonta Junction. The population was 1,542 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Oneonta was Gideon Hempstead, who arrived in 1776 from Great Britain. He and his family were among the earliest settlers on the site that would become Oneonta Junction. The village began to form around 1800 when several farmers bought land here and built homes. In 1809, one of Oneonta's two churches, First Presbyterian Church, became the first religious house in this area. In 1812, Two-thirds Baptist church also joined forces with First Presbyterian to form a congregation known as "First Baptist Church & Mission Society." That same year saw another pioneers arrives: John Aiken from Connecticut brought his horse and wagon with him to start a farm nearby called Aiken's Hill. The Aiken home still stands today on State Road 522 north-west of Oneonta Junction. The early years were difficult for many newcomers due to intermittent floods that swept through these parts during winter rains season; nevertheless, over time Oneonta grew into an attractive community with its own brick courthouse and well-maintained streetscape typical of rural New York villages at that time. With its close proximity to major league baseball teams such as the Brooklyn Atlantics and New York Mutuals - both located in neighboring Kingston - Oneonta quickly emerged as a popular destination for travelers throughout central New York during its early years!
