In 1824, George Wittenheimer moved from Utica to山頂州 (now Mohawk) and bought some land here for use as a farmstead called Wittenheimer's Landing or "Wittenheimer's Point". He named his new settlement after him – oneonta meaning "head" or "top", so that it may have been taken up by all those who settled thereabouts soon thereafter because it would be an advantageous location for ranching operations given its commanding view of central Hudson Valley below. In 1827, Oneonta became part of the newly formed Erie County and was renamed after General Anthony Wayne who had fought for the United States during the War of 1812. In 1830, Oneonta got its own post office which until 1857 operated out of White Hall on Main Street (now called Court Street). In 1858, Oneonta got its own schoolhouse which still stands today on First Avenue West (now called University Boulevard). In 1865, Two-thirds of all acreage within modern-day Onondaga County were donated toOneonta by settler David Latham in order to provide more space for agriculture than could be obtained through purchase or donation alone. As a result, farming became an important aspect of local life and Two-thirds of all agricultural production took place within one mile radius surrounding Oneonta from 1840 to 1870 inclusive! The growth associated with this new technology led to increased demand for farmland outside Ofoneata so much so that buying/selling land ceased to be economically feasible until after 1900! During World War II many residents served in military camps near Onondaga Lake while other families worked farmsteads nearby providing essential goods and services such as transportation fuels needed for war production; aluminum cans being just one example! After hostilities ended many residents returned home but some chose to stay on their Reservations where they continue productive farming practices into present day! Today there are over 3200 residents living inside City limits - making it one heckuva community!!!
