Oneonta, New York is a small town in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. It was first settled in 1784 by Loyalists from Connecticut who had fled the American Revolution. The population of Oneonta peaked at 1,500 in 1882 and has since declined to around 100 today. Oneonta's history can be traced back to early colonial days when it was part of the proprietary colony of Saratoga. In 1784, Oneonta became the capital of what is now Adirondack County and remained so until 1827 when Albany replaced it as the county seat. The area that would eventually become Oneonta was first settled by Native Americans in three periods: before Europeans arrived, during European occupation, and after white settlement began. From about 1250 to 1600 AD there were several villages located near present-day Oneonta; however, no permanent villages developed until after Europeans arrived in 1624 as traders passed through on their way from Canada to visit the region. In 1624 Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered and named what are now Three Humps (now known as Highlands). This location would later be called one of his three discoveries along with Newfoundland and Nova Scotia - all areas that would later become part of New York State. That year also saw Dutch settlers arrive on Long Island seeking land grants following their successful war against English colonists at Fort Nassau on Long Island Sound. For a time it seemed like all these new arrivals were going to create a huge population increase for one small village—but this didn't happen because most people soon left for other parts of America or died from disease contracted while living here. In fact, only about 20 people lived in Oneonta between 1624 and 1675; however, this number increased significantly during King Philip's War (1675-1678) when many local residents enlisted in the Dutch army under Colonel Hendrick Hudson . By 1700 there were over 350 residents living here according to records kept by George Washington . All told, during its brief period as capital city one alternate site for Oneonta served more than 400 people; however Albany quickly outgrew its role and by 1800 only 150 people lived there compared to 2200 people living downtown today! The architecture style prevalent throughout much of North America during this time (Masonry Gothic) likely helped contribute to this decline because many buildings were built without metal or other modern features which led directlyto decay over time due to weathering and rustication caused by groundwater infiltration into older walls etc.. However even if Oneonta never reached its heyday economically or politically it still remains an important community within its own right with a rich cultural heritage that continues today
