In 1830, John Patterson donated a large tract of land east of his original cabin to the town for use as a public square. This donation helped make Oneonta one of the most important communities inupstate New York during its early days. John Patterson's original cabin still stands today and is used as a museum by the local community. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Oneonta is a small town in Upstate New York, located on the border of Orange and Sullivan counties. The population was 1,588 at the 2010 census. Oneonta was established in 1807 as a post office and village, then incorporated in 1868. The town's name comes from two variant anglicizations of its Native American name, Okehanta (“place where the salmon Swim”). The first white person tosight Oneonta was Captain George Vancouver on October 14th 1792 while he led his ships along the south shore of Lake Ontario. Vancouver named the place one of his discoveries - after his ship reached land there on November 10th. In 1795 John Graves Simcoe founded an agricultural community called Oswego County near Oneonta and served as its first county supervisor. In 1807 Oneonta became part of what is now Sullivan County when it was created from part of Orange County. Oneonta has had several restaurants open its doors over the years including Moe's Tavern & Grill (1893-1997), Joe's Chinese Buffet (1905-present), Jack Daniels' Barbecue Pit (1993-present) and Buffalo Bill's BBQ restaurant (1973-1998). The popular tourist attraction here is Abe’s Ice Cream Parlor which has been serving up cones for decades since it opened in 1969 by Abe Weinerstall and his brother Julius Weinerstall. As Oneonta grows more populated, so too does its shopping potential with several large supermarkets present within walking distance such as Walmart, Soo Joes and Kroger stores; however, major department stores are not common here like Macy's or Sears Canada which are located in larger towns nearby. Additionally local businesses offer unique services such as antique shops, gift shops and gas station/convenience stores that make this an interesting destination for shoppers looking for unique items not found elsewhere in Upstate New York
Oneonta, New York is a town in the Town of Oneonta, Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Utica and Northern District of New York City from 1898 to 1925 and again from 1935 to 1938. It was merged into Onondaga County on January 1, 1998.
