Oneonta is a small town in upstate New York, located just south of Rochester. The population was 1,899 at the 2000 census and 2,009 at the 2010 census. Today, both schools are open for use by students from all over upstate New York. The town has experienced many changes since its founding but has retained much of its culture and history that makes it an important part of upstate New York’s fabric. Oneonta is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 5,369 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is included in the Utica-Rome, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oneonta was founded in 1824 by John and Martha (Sandusky) Mohawk and became a town on December 4, 1825. It lost its town charter on February 14, 1829. The name "Onondaga" came from an Iroquois word meaning "place of the white man." The first settler in Onondaga County was Nicholas Cohoes who arrived in 1776 from Albany, New York with his family. He built a cabin near the current village of Oneonta and named it "Cohoes' Nest". In 1785 he married Mary Philipsburg; they had six children: Nicholas (1786-1857), Elijah (1788-1858), John Jr. (1792-1871), George (1800-1865), Martha (1801-1873), and Anna Maria _____? _____? _____? (1806-1900). Nicholas Cohoes died young at age 43 after a long and successful career as a farmer and land speculator in Upstate New York. His widow married Revolutionary War veteran James Sandusky Sr., one of the sons of John Sandusky Sr., who also served as an Indian agent for Loyalist Indians before becoming involved with the Mohawks after their victory over King George III's forces at Battle Of Fallen Timbers in 1775. Ononta was a small community in Chemung County, New York, United States. It was located on the east bank of the Chemung River. The community had a post office from 1814 to 1821, and a school from 1825 to 1840. Ononta is first mentioned in 1695 as "Ontan", which may be derived from the Huron word "honto" meaning "to cross".
