The original inhabitants of Oneonta were Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who migrated from central New England during the early eighteenth century. They developed agriculture and hunting and gathering habits as they transitioned from preindustrial society to what they knew as an agricultural country with dense forest cover and few resources. By 1800 their numbers had dwindled to just over 100 People living in towns scattered throughout western Livingston County and eastern Orange County where they continued to use traditional methods like hunting, fishing, gathering plants and animals and making baskets out of shellfish until about 1840 when Europeans began arrive in large numbers seeking land grants or farming opportunities in what would become America proper. By 1854 all but two members of this community were white European settlers while one group (of Five) remained Indian/Algonquian owned through various combinations including purchase, gift or exchange until 1830 when all their holdings were sold following removal from their homeland due to American Indian Wars fought between United States (or British) forces against hostile native nations led by Chief Buffalo Hiawatha’s confederacy including those now located within modern day Ontario Canada Territory
