The Dutch settlement of Onondaga County was founded by settlers from Holland in 1624 and named after Onondaga Lake in what is now Ontario, Canada. The first post office in Oneonta opened in 1833. The town name was changed to Oneonta in 1865 when it became an incorporated village. In 1872, a hydroelectric power plant was built on the left bank of Onondaga Creek south of Oneonta and operated by the Erie Canal Companys until 1959. In 1912, Oneonta's first high school students graduated from that institution which had been built as a tuberculosis sanitarium for soldiers returning home from World War I. A fire destroyed most of the downtown business district on December 3, 1907; however, due to donations and contributions from citizens throughout the community, reconstruction began immediately and finished less than a year later with completion of new businesses such as banks, grocery stores and Oddfellows Hall (now known as North Middle School). The late Dr. Clarence Hildebrandt served as superintendent of schools for both oneontan catholic churches (the First Congregationalist Church) located north side oneonta square and south side east oneonandagamah avenue until his retirement effective September 1st 2009 aged 82 years old In 1902 there were just twelve residents living within walking distance to each other & only two cars! In 1950 there were over 4500 residents living within 5 miles! Today’s communities have grown because we embrace technology & transportation! With modern amenities like expressways & libraries; our children can access education they wouldn’t be able to otherwise afford! Thanks for supporting our community through these many years

Oneonta, New York is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Rochester-Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Germans in 1795 and named after one of their leaders, Johann Gottfried von Ostenhoff. It became an American settlement in 1800 and was renamed Oneonta after John Onondaga county seat on the Ontario River. In 1813 it united with other towns in Orange County to form the newly created Rochester–Onondaga metropolitan area. Oneonta prospered as a mill town during the early 19th century due to its location along the Onondaga River and its trade with local Native Americans for goods such as corn, beads, and feathers. By 1835 however, mills had closed throughout America due to competition from TEXTILE INDUSTRIES WORLDWIDE (now DuPont) and other industrialists who had moved into central New York during that period of economic growth. After many years of decline one major textile factory reopened in Oneonta in 1909 under new management which helped revive the town's economy. In recent decades Oneonta has seen increased development as a bedroom community for adjacent Rochester; however it retains much of its historical charm including its cobblestone streets and German architecture
