Oneonta is a small, rural town in upstate New York. It is located on the banks of the Hudson River, about 15 miles northeast of Rochester, the state's capital and largest city. The first settlers in Oneonta were French Huguenots who arrived in 1664. They built what is now known as "the White House" on land that they purchased from the Mohawk nation for $10 per acre. The 17th century saw significant growth in Oneonta when farmers began to settle there from around Finger Lakes region of New York State. In 1790, John Nicholson opened a store and post office here which became one of the early commercial centers in Upstate New York. By 1800, Two Rivers Township had been organized and Oneonta had become an important community with its own school district and church services. By 1836, Oneonta boasted over 100 residents with three churches and two stores - one operated by Dutch Protestants and another by Roman Catholics - as well as four blacksmiths and six printers who produced newspapers and other publications.] In 1849-50 local Republicans unsuccessfully ran for governor against James Buchanan; during this time many Republicans came to believe that Buchanan was not really American but rather British through his connections to London's power elite.] In 1865-66 local Democrats took control of government after a bloody civil war fought between Republican loyalists (known as 'The Loyalists') led by Nathan Bedford Forrest and Unionist sympathizers (known as 'The Radicals'). This period also saw rapid construction within Oneonta's limits: new homes were being erected on both sides of Clinton Street; businesses such as grocery stores opened up; schools were built or renovated; water lines were laid] In 1876 William McKinley was elected president seeking to end Reconstruction following America’s Civil War.] As America entered into World War I preparations began for conflict including mobilizationof military troops across all states] The result was more than 1 million men called into service...] On July 4th 1917 Allied forces landed at Salerno on Italy’s coast following months-long planning spearheaded by General Douglas MacArthur] After weeks of fighting German forces surrendered unconditionally]; prisoners were taken along with materials like oil refineries used to make munitions] The end result was wholesale destruction throughout Nazi Germany...Oneonta experienced little damage aside from some minor fires]) After World War II ended most people returned home except for a few hundred displaced persons who continued living in various camps...] A variety of industries have thrived here since then including manufacturing cheese products such as Goudreau cheese], carpeting,[], applesauce],[], mouthwash],[], eggs],[], soap[], paper products such as newsprint[[]]]['Airlines','Automobiles','Banks','Books','Cement','Clothing','Construction']

Oneonta is a small town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 2,591 at the 2000 census. Oneonta is located on the east side of the Chenango River between Hamilton and Cortland counties. It straddles the border of both communities. The first settler in Oneonta was Nicholas Coyne who arrived in 1786. He had been sent by Peter Schuyler as part of his survey for a road from Albany to Kingston on Lake Ontario. Coyne named his property "Coyne's Mills." In 1805, John Fitzpatrick bought land around Oneonta from Nicholas Coyne and erected a gristmill on the river bank which he called Fitzpatrick's mill (now known as Fitzpatrick Park). In 1825, James Tompkins purchased some land from John Fitzpatrick and erected a sawmill and lumberyard near Oneonta. That same year, Ebenezer Hazard built a house adjacent to Tompkins' mill for himself and his family. In 1830, Samuel Morse founded The Western Union Telegraph Company here with office space then located in what is now Elmira College before moving it to Rochester two years later. The community continued to grow until 1865 when its population decreased by over 50% due to the Great Migration of American families seeking opportunity during that era (see below). In 1920 Two Rivers Dam was constructed along the Chenango River near present-day Oneonta; this caused rapid water rise which destroyed many homes and businesses along what used to be an agricultural area; one theory suggests that damming also contributed to high levels of lead found in local water supplies after decades of being used by farmers for irrigation purposes only The dam also created Three Bridges Road which bisects present day Oneonta into two halves; one half remains within the boundaries of today's town while the other half became part of Cortland County after being transferred from one municipality into another concurrent with construction of Two Rivers Dam These days you can still find remnants of those bridges just beyond where I live! From my home upriver all I see are moundsicated logs still lying there like big pieces outcropping out from under where once roads crossed over them
