Oneonta is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneonta-on-Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Oneonta was Abram Burr and his family in 1784. The town was founded by John Davenport on a piece of land he bought from the Mohawk Nation for $1,000 in 1814. When the Erie Canal was built through what is now Oneonta in 1825, business opportunities increased and the town became known as "the canal town." In 1830 it had a schoolhouse and three churches: Baptist (now Stroud's Episcopal), Methodist, and Presbyterian. A post office called Oneonta began operations on July 8, 1830; its current name comes from the fact that it served as one of five points along the Erie Canal at which mail could be sent to or from Buffalo. In 1836 Oneonta voted to secede from New York State and become an independent republic under President Andrew Johnson; they were joined by Seneca Falls soon afterward. On May 3,1837 Johnson signed an act creating Niagara County; however, only a few weeks later Onondaga county also became separate due to pressure from Albany politicians concerned about possible secessionist behavior by Oneonta. Oneonta lost its independence when New York state merged with Canada in 1949; however it retains some unique characteristics including having its own government and currency (the Canadian dollar). The original founders of Oneonta are buried there beneath Founders Cemetery off Main Street today. Today there are fewer than 100 residents living in Oneonta but it remains an important stop on Route 9 for tourists visiting Niagara Falls and other nearby attractions such as Lake Ontario National Park

Oneonta is a small town in New York County, east of Buffalo. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Oneonta has been inhabited by the Lenape people for centuries and is one of the most significant sites in Indian history. The name "Oneonta" means "place where the stream divides." In 1813, Colonel John Campbell bought land here from the Lenape and named it after his home town of Oneida, New York. In 1814, General George Washington's army encamped at Oneonta to rest before their invasion of Canada. Here he met Major General Lewis Cass, who told him about a trading post called Fort Niagara on the Ontario River that could provide food and ammunition for his troops if they reached that goal. Washington agreed to help build this fort and ordered Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson to take command of its construction. Wilkinson's party began thirty miles (48 km) north of Oneonta on September 8, 1814. On October 6th, 1830 – more than two decades after Washington's death – Alexander Hamilton presented him with a copy of A Topography and History OF Western New York (published anonymously). This book included an incorrect map which showed Albany as the easternmost point on Long Island; it actually located in Kingston on Hudson Bay Territory near present-day Toronto! The first settler in what is now Oneonta was Captain David Levy who arrived there in 1797 with his family from Philadelphia via Kingston upon Hull,. He was followed by Samuel Fenton in 1800 who built a sawmill around 1800 which became known as Fentonville; indeed many early settlers were also involved in milling activities such as Nicholas Leeds who established Leeds Mill between 1793-1811 and Nathaniel Lyon who operated a gristmill dating back to 1798 along current US Route 20A just south of present day Oneonta village limits
