Oneonta first appeared on maps in 1786 as "Ontonagon". The first settler in what is now Oneonta was John Tryon, who arrived there in 1786. Tryon's brother-in-law, Nicholas Perrine, established a log cabin here in 1788 and named it after his birthplace on the Ontario River: Ontonagon (pronounced "On-tuh-naght"). In 1807, Alexander McKenzie built a tavern and store here. From this business growth came economic prosperity for Oneonta until around 1830 when silver discoveries began to fill the coffers of miners throughout the Erie County area. This led to an increase in population and businesses here which affected not only Oneonta but also neighboring towns such as Danville and Fort Niagara; by 1840, Oneonta had become one of the most populous settlements within easy driving distance of Buffalo. However, during the next decade or so many residents left for jobs opportunities outside the narrow neck of land between Buffalo and New York City; some went all the way to California while others simply sold their homes and emigrated to other parts of America including Canada where they founded numerous new villages along Lake Simcoe before finally making their return to North America around 1850. The postbellum years were difficult for Muchonta due mainly to two factors: 1) technological advances had made it easier for people from other parts of New England and Canada to migrate westward into western New York during this time period; 2) much changed withunks since World War II brought large numbers more Germans eastward into Upstate NY than anywhere else – those newcomers effectively displaced most nativeborn citizens who were unable or unwilling to change with rapidly changing social norms. Oneonta is a small town in the U.S. state of New York. It is located in Broome County, east of Binghamton and north of Syracuse. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. Oneonta was first settled in 1812 by Nicholas Hennig and his family. In 1827, John Augustus Stratton purchased land here from Nicholas Hennig and began to build a house on what is now First Street. The town's first post office opened in 1829, and its only store was opened in 1840 by J.H. Bemis & Sons traders who transported goods overurden the Erie Canal from Buffalo to Oneonta via the Seneca Lake waterway. The town grew rapidly due to its location near two major transportation corridors: the Erie Canal which connected Buffalo with New York City, and the Seneca Lake waterway which allowed for easy shipping of goods from upstate New York into Albany and Philadelphia through the Mohawk Valley..
