In 1814, Oneonta log cabin was built by Nicholas Ketchum and others on what is now Main Street. In 1827 Nathaniel Putnam built a grist mill on the south side ofriver near present day Elmira Road. In 1830 John Fenton erected a frame schoolhouse on what is now east Main Street. In 1831 Isaac Beekman established a stagecoach stop at Oneonta for passengers traveling to Seneca Falls and Buffalo. A post office was established at Oneonta in 1836; it remained open until 1870. In 1839 George Burt set up business as an insurance agent in Oneonta; he continued this operation until his death in 1861. In 1840–41 Samuel Morse visited the area and designed the first transatlantic telegraph line between Washington D.C., Baltimore Maryland (the "Western Union Telegraph Company" Line), and AlbanyNY (the "Central Union Telegraph Company" Line). Morse's cable car service began operations across Oneonta Lake in1845 using horses drawn by wagons pulled by horses or mules over bridges spanning one or more branches ofthe river; these crossings were later replaced by ferries operating between Onondaga Creek () north of town and Susquehanna River (). In 1868, Oneonta became part of the newly organized Town of Clinton and remained so until 1954 when it became an independent community again under the name Oneonta-Clinton. In 1984, Oneonta-Clinton became a part of the City of Albany which merged with its neighboring towns on February 1, 1995 to form the current city/town structure.
