Oneonta, New York is a town in Yates County, New York, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is one of five towns in Yates County. The other four are Albion, Ithaca, North Canandaigua and South Canandaigua. The first settler in Oneonta was Nicholas D'Angelo who arrived in 1795. Oneonta was founded on July 12, 1805 by Cornetto "Nick" Ciminelli and his wife Anna Maria from the village of Fortunato in the Province of Naples. They named their new settlement for Nicholas's uncle Anthony Onondaga who had come overland from Canada that year with a group of others to take up land grants given to them by Governor John Tryon. Onondaga had been living near Syracuse when he received word that General George Washington was moving southward with an army to crush the rebellion against British rule and he hastened northward to join him at Albany where he soon found himself head of a large party of French Canadian refugees who had also come overland from Canada. When Tryon learned of this event he ordered all French Canadian settlers within two miles (3 km) of Syracuse to leave without any compensation or warning and many did so before leaving for Ontario early the next day as they were afraid retribution would be taken if they remained behind. Ciminelli and his family moved into what is now downtown Oneonta about 1830-1831 after purchasing property east of Main Street from Nicholas D'Angelo's brother-in-law Giovanni Battista Morelli Sr.. After more than 40 years as farmers and loggers, Ciminelli sold most or all his holdings except for a small piece around present-day Maple Avenue cornering Elmira Road several years after his death in 1892; during that time it continued under the name "Ciminelli Farms". Moses Morse operated a gristmill on Black Creek betweenafts until 1873 when it became part of Matson & Co.'s flour mill complex which included mills at Manlius Falls (now Baxter State Park), Webster Falls (now Dunkirk), Northumberland Mills (now Lockport), Southumberland Mills (now Seneca Lakes) and Griggs Mill No 2 on presentdays Water Gap Road just upstream frompresenthectareof occupied land along Buffalo Creek owned by Juel Hargrave until 1903 when it became part of dye works operated by Phelps Dodge Chemical Company until its sale to Pabst Brewing Company in 1922. In 1929 Phelps Dodge merged with Kuhn Loeb & Co., creating Pabst Brewery which kept Slater’s Mill open as an engine horsepower plant until 1984 when it closed down due to economic problems but reopened as Anheuser Busch operations began operation there starting in 1985 using former Slater’s Mill equipment including an old grain elevator built by Westinghouse Electric Corporation.. In 1990 AnheuserBusch bought out Pabst Brewing Company making Oneonta again one stop shop for beer products pending construction on a new distribution center which never materialized although plans existed for its erection since 1980 In 1932 Nickelodeon started production at facilities formerly located at Webster Falls and Northumberland Mills; production ended there three years later because OFarrell Chappell decided To make films outdoors only instead Of building sets inside studios like those used today . The original production set still exists inside OFarrell Chappell Elementary School across Elmira Road fromOFarrell Chappell Jr.'s parents home . Production recommenced outside on stage opposite Cathedral Hall before finally ending six years later becauseof weather concerns associated with World War II .. A few weeks ago evidence surfaced showing that parts of ancient movie sets have been discovered buried beneath one recent development near downtown Oneonta .. even though no one knows how these sets got there or why they were left behind... According to local historian Dr Donald Macdonald much effort has gone into restoring old buildings throughout town following Hurricane Floyd which damage occurred November 13th EF 1999 residents remain cautious about such activity however restoration efforts continue nonetheless Oneonta is located at 6°55′N 73°42′W / 6°55'N 73°42'W / -75·2 km² . According to USGS Geological Survey Quadrangle Map #4199A , density altitude data shows 471 people per square mile (/km²). Population growth rate during 2000–2010 (%): 0·7%. Demographics according to 2010 Census: 1·521 people
