Olean, New York is a small village located in the town of Orchard Park, within the Erie County borough of Niagara Falls. The population was 1,374 at the 2010 census. The Village was chartered on October 15, 1852 and named for Olean, Scotland. The first settler in what is now Olean was Alexander Macdonald who arrived in 1847. In 1860, James Fenton bought 7 acres of land and built a cabin. By 1870-71 Olean had a schoolhouse and 4 stores. There were also 5 families living in Olean by 1880. In 1892-93 an act to form the Town of Orchard Park was submitted to the legislature and it passed on April 17th. On October 15th, 1852, the village becameVillage by an act of the state Legislature which granted them 3 miles2 border on each side with Westmoreland County (now Ontario). On November 6th 1861 Mr John McLaughlin purchased 2nd lot adjoining that on which he lived until his death in 1911) Mr JFenton's original cabin still remains standing as one of the few buildings left from that early era in this small community which saw heavy growth during its early years due largely to Ulster cattle feeders coming through these hills every season bringing their herds down into our valley for winter grazing purposes rather than across country

Olean, New York is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 9,421 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-Oneida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was formed from parts of the villages of Rome and Onondaga in 1814. Olean is named after Col. George Washington's birthplace on Otter Creek in Fairfax County, Virginia. The first settler in what would become Olean was Abram Crouch who erected a log cabin on the banks of Otter Creek in 1798. In 1800 John Fenton built a gristmill and store near present day Main Street and Church Road which became known as Fenton's Mill until 1824 when it reverted to Crouch’s ownership. Settlement began along the Schuyler River Valley west of Rome by French colonists from Quebec arrived during the early 19th century looking for land to grow crops and hunting opportunities for their horses and cattle. By 1830 about fifty families had settled here including fifteen farmers, three traders, one militia man Captain Nathaniel Doye (1777 – 1840), five mechanics, two blacksmiths and one miller; all living on small parcels of land around ponds or streams that became known as "creekments". In 1814 Colonel George Washington’s estate called Fairfax Court House lay contiguous withpresent day Olean by geographic location but without any legal connection between them either then or now because no deed had been made public pursuant to an act passed February 15th 1818 providing for organization of Schuyler Counties into townships under direction of the General Assembly having due regard tothe importance thereof etc… Notwithstanding this there gradually grew up throughout both villages a mutual feeling towards each other based principally upon their common history & vicinity; such feelings were further intensified by rivalry caused by differences arising among various sections within both villages over access to water supplies & other resources necessary for agricultural purposes; these rivalries led eventually to actual civil war between Rome & Onondaga Villages over control of these same resources some twenty years later A connected account will be given hereafterof that conflict resulting from political subdivision rather than natural causes... Olenean Township was organized December 13th 1825 following Map No 1 pg 527 et seq submittedto General Assembly at its meeting held at Albany on January 10th aforesaid created out OF Ontonagonia Township eastward line next north Of The Genesee River [now Niagara Falls]; thence southwesterly along said line unto Village Of Rome [now Syracuse], thence easterly across said village line & through it Into Onondaga Township where it terminated…. . In 1830 Samuel Morse opened his new country store near Main Street which became known as Morse's Store until 1860 when it reverted back to Crouch’s ownership again after being closed by Morse himself because he could not get passage through customs officials at Buffalo for his goods arriving from Canada via Rochester NY! This event is also significant because Congress passing an act Augustus Saint Paul funded $10 thousand towards infrastructure projects in Onondaga Township building upon recommendations made by Governor Paulding who chaired a commission appointed thereto including Drury Mayor Wm Brownell (& 3 others)…. . In 1840 Abraham Lincoln moved his family from Illinois to Springfield IL while attending University there so he could work on his career as a lawyer; they returned to Springfield only four years later when Lincoln ran for President against James Buchanan….. . Massachusetts Union Party candidate Horace Greeley also campaigned here during this time…….. polls open at 7am local time every morning
Olean was first settled in 1795 by Elisha C. Cornell and his family. The town was named after Olean, a village in upstate New York, which he had been visiting as part of his travels. In 1804, the town voted to secede from Otsego County and form a new county, Otsego County, with its own government. The Town of Olean became the capital of the new county.
