Olean is a small town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Olean was Nicholas Hogg in 1796. He and his family were the first white people to arrive in this area. He bought land on the east side of Bear Lake from the Mohawk Nation for $5 per acre. One of Olean's most famous residents was Judge John Tryon, who served as an Associate Justice on the New York Supreme Court from 1828 to 1831 and again from 1849 to 1850. In 1835 Tryon built a log cabin on his farmstead which still stands today and is used as a museum by Olean historians. In 1830, Samuel Morse founded The Western Union Telegraph Company with offices in Olean and other towns across western New York State. Morse proposed using electric telegraphy services between Albany and Buffalo but did not receive approval from state regulators until 1865 when he started transmitting wire messages over horseback between Buffalo and Rochester using an improved system called "Fulton Wire". Halfway through transmission one of Morse's horses became sick; he abandoned transmission for eight hours until he found another horse to work with him safely for the rest of the journey back home. In 1888, The Western Union Telegraph Company merged with The National Telegraph Company (later VSTC) to form General Electric Corporation (GE). GE continued operations as Western Union until 2006 when it merged into Comcast . The village of Olean experienced significant growth following annexation by Syracuse in 1919 as part of Mayor James Breslin's plans to house newly developed jobs within city limits while Stillwater remained rural. After World War II came a period of rapid development due to petrochemical production within commuting distance; however, since then there has been little real population growth within town boundaries save for occasional additions such as those made after annexations or during annexee changes such as the incorporation of neighboring villages into town borders without giving them their own municipal status according to Town Boardrules subsequent thereto (e.g., Amherst Heights annexed by Rome Township in 1999). However even these occasional updates have generally failed to result in substantive change except perhaps lessening traffic congestion on Route 9A through town center where access originally had been via two separate intersections before being unified under one junction about three years ago following a referendum sponsored by several businesses including Chambers Hardware that successfully lobbied for this change de minimis proportions given that all other businesses within walking distance either operate independently or are connected directly with larger commercial districts located elsewhere within or outside Syracuse - hardly indicative of any kindOf vitality or community spirit among its residents past or present notwithstanding! Olean was founded by the Erie Canal in 1825 as a small town on the eastern bank of the Delaware River. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important transportation and commercial center for the area. In 1872, Olean became part of Albany County, New York. In 1898, Olean was renamed after General Julius Caesar Augustus O'Neill, who had been governor of New York from 1889 to 1893.
