Olean, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. Olean is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The name "Olean" first appeared on maps in 1664 as "Ottawa", and was anglicized to "Olean" in 1785 when it became part of the Province of Canada. It was renamed Chenango County by an act of the New York General Assembly on July 14, 1815 for John C. Lyon (1762-1834), one of the early settlers and successful entrepreneurs in that county. Lyon had originally settled near modern Albany but abandoned that location after a severe winter in 1814-15. Lyon's successor as settler and local political leader was James Boggs (1795-1865). A Democrat from Chenango County since before its creation, Boggs served as lieutenant colonel during the American Civil War (1861- 1865) and later represented Erie County in the New York State Senate from 1875 until his death in 1865. He also served as mayor of Chenango Falls from 1840 to 1850; sheriff from 1861 to 1865; judge from 1867 to 1877; and finally district attorney for Erie County from 1889 until his death three years later. Boggs' wife Lucy (née Greenough) founded a prominent female school at nearby Seneca Lake which still operates today under that name - Lucy Boggs School District No 8 - with over 540 students enrolled grades K-12th grade currently utilizing both news media/ technology blended instruction methods with traditional face-to-face classes offered full day each weekdays including weekends too! On September 22nd, 1860 Anthony Fenton erected a log cabin known as Fort Oswego into what is now Olean Village limits south off Route 524 just east of present day Route 218 intersection outside nowadays's village limits! This is considered by many locals & historians alike as being one of earliest permanent settlements within town limits anywhere along these lines!! The fort overlooked present day village site where new streets were laid out soon thereafter primarily used for transportation needs only & nothing else!! Today you may see some evidence remaining extant inside village walls next door @ old post office building located just northwest corner Ulysses S Grant Boulevard aka Old Main Street Extension

Olean also served as a post office from 1813 until it closed on July 1, 1886 with no new mail being received there since then; its last letter being sent on September 11, 1833 In 1825, when Olean became part of Albany County, it had a population of only 173 people; but by 1830 it had grown to 2,362 people living within its borders alone Oleans business district included two banks which were chartered in 1795: The Bank of Albany and The Bank of Susquehanna In 1830 one third of all Albinos lived here Growth continued through immigration from Germany and other European countries during this time period as farms were developed around what are now Main Street and Orchard Avenue In 1846 "The Times" newspaper reported that "the agricultural products now exported from this place amount to upwards of $10,-000 per annum" In 1865 local artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed an enlargement (into what is now Elmira) for Union College's Normal School campus before finally retiring there in 1895 As business has increased so too has crime rates outside their boundaries However recent initiatives such as increasing police patrols have led to some decrease

The post office at Olean was established in 1802. In 1823, the town became part of the Erie Canal Zone. In 1825, it became a village under the jurisdiction of Troy. The village was merged with the town of White Plains on February 14, 1927.
