Olean, New York is a small town in the Catskills of upstate New York. It is located on the south side of the Mohawk River and consists of just over 1,000 residents. The town was founded in 1814 by German immigrants who named it for their hometown of Ulm, Germany. Olean's population peaked at around 3,500 in 1930 but has since decreased to around 1,200 today. The history of Olean goes back to 1814 when German immigrants settled in what is now Olean. They called the area "Ulm" after their home country and named the first school "Olevania". In 1830, when the Panic of 1837 hit America, many Germans emigrated to America looking for a better life. Some landed on Long Island but most headed downstate to Olean where they set up shop among other pioneer families. By 1840, there were only about 100 people living in Olean - all farmers and fishermen. But within 5 years, that number had increased to 350 with new arrivals coming from Germany and Austria as well as Holland and Sweden. By 1850, there were 700 people living in Olean - half of whom were farmers and fishermen along with a few mechanics and traders who did business out of town. In 1865-67 when land reform was taking place throughout Upstate New York due to increasing pressure from Northern capitalists interested in acquiring land for themselves instead of developing it for local citizens- many Germans came overland from Canada looking for property rights during this time frame which they could use during their lifetime if not sold or given away outrightupon death (a common practice then). Olean, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 7,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–New Rochelle metropolitan area. The first settler in Olean was John Prentice in 1786. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson (1767-1846), who fought in the American Revolution and later became president. In 1825, the town changed its name to Rome after Roman Emperor Constantine I's conversion to Christianity. In 1856, Rome changed its name again to Olean after General Philip Kearny (1792-1865) who had led US forces during the Mexican War and also served as a Ulysses S Grant's mentor and political advisor. In 1870, Olean entered into an agreement with Schenectady which allowed them to jointly build a railroad from Schenectady down through their townships and into Saratoga County on what would become known as the Albany Railroad. This allowed Syracuse to become closer to its eastern neighbor while building up industry around Schenectady Station on the line. By 1880, it had reached 100 inhabitants; by 1910 it had only 16 residents due largely to declines in manufacturing jobs in nearby Rochester and other areas of New York City following World War I and Prohibition efforts across America). However, once production shifted away from agriculture towards textiles and other light manufactures during World War II – most notably shoes made at Armour & Company – Olean began experiencing growth again due bothto new development within its borders as well as population growth outside of it due primarilyto migration from rural areas throughout Upstate New York following World War II; specifically Buffalo Niagara Falls among others.
