Olean is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Olean is located on the north side of the Niagara River and is part of the Utica-Rome-Newburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Olean comes from a word meaning "old growth" or "a clearing in woods." The first settler in what is now Olean was Nicholas Pequigny who arrived there in 1792. In 1805, John Stephenson founded a gristmill on the east bank of the river about two miles northeast of present day Olean. The townspeople voted to incorporated as a village on December 15, 1825. In 1830, an act of Congress created four townships within Monroe County: Clinton Township (now Orleans), Fulton Township (now Oneida), Onondaga Township (now Oswego), and Steuben Township (now Wayne). When these townships were organized into new counties they continued to use the name "Monroe". In 1868, one hundred years after it had been established that there were five separate counties within New York State all named for George Washington – Monmouthshire, Nassau, Orangeburgh/Orchard Beach/Old Port/East Deptford – Livingston County became known as Stewartland because its first courthouse situate near modern day Kingston upon Hull just outside Livingston County line and not far from where Fort Erie lay across Lake Ontario – creating yet another confusion with neighboring Ontario County which still bore that original name despite having no courthouse built there! On May 14th 1889 while stirring up traffic congestion along Genesee Street between Main Street and Utica Avenue Bridge following his inauguration as Mayor of Utica John Wills collided headlong with several cars driven by his assistant William Hildebrandt behind their vehicle parked at front steps of City Hall Annex killing both men instantly and causing great damage to building resulting in $2 million worth of damage assessed against city government for “liable expenses” only six months later! And so began what would become known as “the Great Crash” that year with business activity throughout much central NY paralysed by accidents caused by drunken drivers during this time period not seen again until well into World War II when many soldiers returning from overseas found their businesses closed due to Prohibition being repealed… For those few who managed to keep their businesses going during prohibition thank you very much! It wasn't until 1951 when Utica elected its first female mayor codenamed “Nancy” becoming one of only three American cities to do so during that time period also boasting one of America's most successful mayors ever followed by Buffalo amending its charter making it an open city subject to mayoral elections rather than having a single individual appointed via majority vote like other municipalities did then! township elections being held every other year beginning in 1898 except 1917 due to World War I; last township election being held on April 7th 1933 following incorporation into unincorporated area now comprising portions Of Onondaga and Wayne Counties. Today's economy relies heavily upon service industry such as health care, government services & law enforcement; manufacturing including steel production which ceased operations around 1990 due to declining prices for materials imported from abroad; tourism featuring excellent hiking trails close by plus Several waterfalls & lakes nearby; farming based primarily around raising chickens & pigs but also vegetable production including home grown apples produce local grapes etc.; light manufacturing such as construction fencing posts etc., providing jobs for local people even without state or federal contracts especially sinceUTICA offers no public assistance programs like welfare or food stamps however eligible residents may apply for free housing through HUD if they meet certain qualifications

Olean is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, east of the village of Oneida and west of the village of Lodi. The first permanent settler in what would become Olean was David Snyder in 1795. He purchased land from the Mohawk Nation and built a tavern on what is now Main Street. The first Post Office was established in 1816 by Elias Howe with three other settlers. In 1824, John Hogg opened a mill on High Falls Creek which became one of the most important commercial operations in Olean until it closed its doors for good in 1938. A gristmill operated from 1829 to 1861; a sawmill from 1862 to 1938; an auction house from 1840 to 1944; and two brick buildings that still stand today as local shops – Oneida Bank and Daughters Store – all began operating after being erected during the 1830s when mills were becoming more popular than houses as places to sell goods online or off-site. In 1872, Jabez Morse bought 5 acres (20 hectares) south of town along High Falls Creek for $1,000 cash and developed it into Morse Farmstead which remains an agricultural center today with over 100 businesses including 200 dairy cows and 400 sheep operation totaling over $10 million annual revenue. It was also here that Mayor Adolphus Greeley made his famous address “We Are Competing” before leading New York forces into battle against American Civil War General Ulysses Southerland at Saratoga Heights near Oswego in 1863 during what is now known as America's bloodiest conflict since World War II thanks largely to Lt.-Gen James Longstreet’s corps under Gouverneur Morris who led artillery fire from atop Morse Farmstead while also inflicting heavy casualties among Confederate forces backed by General Robert E Lee’s armysupported by General George McClellan's armyFrom 1865 until 1870 when Union troops finally destroyed it due to disease – Morse Farmstead served as headquarters for Colonel Amos Harding's 2nd Brigade militia unit which patrolled the area adjacent to present day Olean beaches during both Federal Occupation times period prior thereto through Prohibition era It continued serving this role until 1946 when it burned down due to vandalism by some students attending nearby Oneida Hills High School whereupon Major Dodge USN reactivated Chatham Hall Inn on nearby Mechanic Road functions as a bed and breakfast inn/cafeteria complex still extant today making Olean one of only few towns remaining within New York State possessing such heritage along withalbeit smaller communities like Auburn Hills, Troy etc where same functions are currently leased out by hotel operators Morse Farmstead re-erected itself just north of town limits opposite Oneida Hills HS across main street circa 1955-1960 features large yellow trimming & 4 white round towers characterized variously as "Grave Marker" or "Old Tribute" marks original site boundary between town & school district boundaries lasting thru at least 1954 when enlarged following incorporation— later abandoned again? visible w/new asphalt siding approx 1990-. . . photo taken circa2005 In 1934 Bethlehem Steel Corporation relocated their production line from Garysburg, Indiana (just outside Schenectady County) approximately 550 miles (~800 km) away via railroads northward via Buffalo Avenue through Syracuse then northeast via Route 24 towards Syracuse' arterial expressway system eventually terminating at Ithaca about 13 miles (~21 km). From 1935 until 1957 Bethlehem produced high quality steel products primarily for autos and appliances but expanding into other markets too including radios, radios antennas etc. following company buyout by Ford Motor Company resulting in establishment - beginning use - of Bethlehem Steel Carriage Works location immediately northwest side OF town Limits right next door former home Of Mrs Mabel Honeycutt prior To open day Feb 3rd 1935Prior TO 1937 there WAS NO STEEL PRODUCTION IN OR NEAR OLENENY
