Olean is one of the oldest towns in Upstate New York, founded by Germans in 1792. The first settler in what became Olean was Jacob Kapp. Farming began to take hold soon after, and Olean developed into a prosperous community with a rich German history. Thanks to its location on Mohawk River, which flows through the town center, agriculture has been key to Olean’s economy for centuries. Today, many residents commute to jobs in nearby Buffalo or Syracuse. Today's downtown area includes several businesses and cultural attractions such as the Ahuntsic Mansion Museum of Art and History (opened in 2009), the Ohsweken Community Cultural Center (opened in 2002), and PNC Park–the home of both the Rochester Americans baseball team and the Finger Lakes Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit hockey team – as well as two churches: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1812) and United Reformed Church (founded 1793). The town also contains some smaller retail businesses as well as two schools: One private school serving students grades Pre-K through 8th grade; one public school serving grades 9th through 12th grade. In addition to these traditional services found within most small towns throughout America, there are also several government agencies based out of town including Town Hall; fire department; police department; library; wastewater treatment plant; post office; ambulance service; grocery store/cafeteria/convenience store combination known locally as "The General Store."

Whatever the case may be; by 2200 BC mankind hadacquired rudimentary KNIVES solely for HUNTING AND FISHING!!! This primitive tool was soon refined into what we know today as a AXE!!!!!!!!! What an amazing development!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Olean is a small town in Broome County, New York, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Onondaga-Canton, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Olean was founded by Dutch settlers in 1664 as Papago Hills and changed its name to Olean in 1838 when it became part of the Erie Canal Zone. The first settler in what is now Olean was Philip de Valk who platted the present day village on July 8, 1664. De Valk's plat included an area that would later be known as downtown Olean. At first there were no buildings or permanent residents in what is now Olean; all that existed were a few scattered trees and some Indian ruins which had been left behind by previous Native American occupants. In 1786, Henry Clinton bought from Joseph Tischler a plot of land east of today's Main Street for $1 per acre (the equivalent of about $40 per square mile). In 1792 Clinton built the first frame house in what is now downtown Olean and named it Clinton Tavern after his predecessor as Broome County Sheriff and future Ulysses S. Grant's childhood friend and neighbor on Governors Island Henry Clinton had purchased years earlier from Nicholas Bayard. In 1813 John Bemis sold to George Washington Ford two lots extending along Main Street from where Interstate 95 currently intersects it to Payne Road just north of where Post Office Square stands today - this being one large lot purchased by Washington Ford for only $10 cash! In 1861 during the American Civil War General John Auchinleck garrisoned Fort Niagara here while he fortified Buffalo approximately 20 miles away across Lake Ontario; fortunately for us nothing happened to General Auchinleck or Fort Niagara while we were living here! The fortifications still stand but have been pulled down over time due to vandalism! The building now used as a post office served until 1975 when it burned down leaving much evidence inside including letters, recipes for cake and cupcakes etc., which are now on display in nearby Syracuse University’s Schoenfeld Library’s archives department! One can walk up Main Street today all the way to where Ford’s store once stood and view most if not all of these artifacts without ever having gone more than 100 feet from where they originally sat! In 1834, David Maloney donated land east of current day Schoolhouse Road/Route 6 for a public school district called “Oleville Union Free School District No 3” – this being one year before Syracuse City Limits were established!! With this donation came also title to lots lying northeast corner Of Schoolhouse Road/Route 6 And Elmira Rd!!! This property would later become known as “Old High School Park” Today part of Northside Elementary school located southwest corner Of Elmira Rd./Schoolhouse Rd!!!! Most important however was Maloney donating money towards masonry supplies needed for new school building construction – this amounting to around $2000 dollars!! On May 12th 1835 finally school doors opened at Old High School Park after many delays caused by lack of funds !! This marks not only the opening of our schools but also local history with Old High School Park serving both functions simultaneously until eventually closure due to need for enlarged facilities sometime between 1861-1872!!! Just west off I-95 near exit 68 & Baldwinsville Rd lies another site formerly occupied by Old High School which has since been replaced by an auto dealership!!!!! Lastly located right next door To & Across From I-95 Is Our Lady Of Victory Chapel which serves both religious needs & functions as a place OF HOMELAND SECURITY FOR LITTLE ROCK COUNTY Residents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
