One of these businesses was the Olean Armory, which operated from 1812-1815. The armory became a key player in New York's firearms industry and helped contribute to the city's reputation as a center for gunsmithing and firearm retailers. In 1827, the armory was sold to Commodore John Wainwright and renamed the Olean Arsenal. The arsenal continued operation until it closed in 1858. During its time, the Olean Arsenal manufactured more than 100 cannon, rifles, pistols, artillery pieces and other firearms.
Olean is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. The name is from the Mohawk word "oleh" meaning "broad meadow." Olean and neighboring Schenectady are two of the oldest towns in upstate New York and were founded by Dutch immigrants in 1686. The first settlers arrived in 1686 on a small farm near what is now Olean. In 1714, Peter Minnis moved his family to what is now Olean from Albany after the city was destroyed by fire. He built a log cabin which served as the nucleus of what would become the present-day village of Olean. By 1802, there were 259 people living in Olean; it had grown steadily since its founding. In 1814, when skirmishes broke out between British military units and Native Americans near modern-day Schenectady, Major General John Burgoyne ordered an attack on the village of Oswego on suspicion that its inhabitants were aiding Indian forces against British troops under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Commander David Hunter assigned Major General Moses Woodbury to lead an army composed of 7 companies of infantry and 5 artillery pieces to march into Oswego to destroy or drive off any Indian resistance before retreating back towards Saratoga Heights. The village responders (20 men) set up their huts facing west across a field about 0.5 miles wide where they remained until dark until orders arrived not to cross into Canada but continue advancing towards Oswego through open country via woods and fields east of town line which they did without incident until morning when Woodbury’s force discovered houses hidden behind trees along road leading into Canada “in condition that no one could approach them without being seen” only later realizing they had been duped when information reached headquarters thatarmy column was instead going around bend to north and then continuing direct course for Saratoga Heights). This event has been called “the greatest fiasco ever fought by American forces” with some historians noting that it may have led directly to Battle Of Little Big Horn which resulted in Ulysses S Grant becoming General US Army commander

Olean is a small town in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. Olean is located on the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River and has a surrounded area of 9 square miles (24 km²). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square mile (3 km²), all of it land. The first settler in what is now Olean was James Hickey who arrived in 1798 with his family from Connecticut. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Hickey's Farm." In 1802, John McCullough married Hickey's daughter and he changed the name to "Olean". In 1815, Nicholas Myers also moved to Olean and started an inn which became known as the Myers House.In 1825, Joseph Sell became owner of "Sell's Mill" which churned out flour for local markets. By 1830, there were three mills in operation: one by Nicholas Myers and two by Sell.In 1840-41 Gertrude Alderheide came to Olean from Pennsylvania with her husband William Alderheide Sr.. They founded "Alderheide & Co." grocery store and dry goods store which still operates today as part of Empire Grocery Company Limited Partnership In 1851-52 Jno Pohlman came to live in Olean after coming overland from Germany with his family on horseback In 1861-62 Jacob Davenport arrived from Vermont aboard the Steamship Maine Davenport purchased land east of present day Main Street from Nicholas Myers for $100 cash .He soon began building a house on this land that would become known as The Davenport Mansion The first post office established in Olean was called "Davenportville" after Jacob Davenport .It opened on July 15th ,1861 By 1870 there were six farms in operation along with a schoolhouse and lumberyard near where Main Street meets Route 12 today
The town of Olean was laid out in 1784 by the Dutch Settlers. The name is derived from a word meaning "hillock" or "upright mound." The first European tosight the area was Captain John Walsh who sailed into what is now known as the Lake Ontario watershed on July 25, 1784. He named it after his native County Mayo, Ireland. In 1801, the town was annexed by New York and became part of the newly formed city of New York.
