Olean is a small town in upstate New York, located on the shore of Lake Ontario. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Olean is part of the Adirondack Park region. The first European settler in what is now Olean was John Fenton who arrived in 1795 and started a fruit farm. The name "Olean" originated with Michael Quinn's Donation to the Congregational Church (now First United Methodist) on April 6th, 1833 which gave $1,000 to be used for erection of a church and school at Olean Falls. In 1881, when Olean became an incorporated village, local farmers organized themselves into accomplished businesses such as sawmill, gristmill and flour milling operation; meatpacking house; bakery; hotel; post office; five storey livery stable; blacksmith shop and carriage factory. Merchants were also able to established their own churches: First United Methodist (1881), Christ Episcopal (1892), Presbyterian (1902), Odd Fellows Lodge No. 2 (1903) and Masonic lodge No.) On July 1st 1912 Olean had its first telephone line when the American Telephone & Telegraph Company offered service to residents within 5 miles of its wires right through thevillage center across from First United Methodist Church On October 15th 1914 Mayor Prentice Wickersham dedicated said new phone line while members of Village Council were present including Trustee Elisha Rocheman who served as Chairman late that night . In 1922 Village President George Haggerty requested Ulysses S Grant write him asking for financial assistance for improving public transportation system which would include building a road from Ninth Street eastward thru our village boundaries to connect with larger villages northeast of us

Olean, New York is a small town in Otsego County, New York, located on the shore of Lake Ontario. It is the seat of Otsego County and had a population of 9,434 as of 2010. The first settler in what is now Olean was Nicholas Sacco, who purchased land from the Mohawk people in 1776. The area that now Olean was part of Albany Township before it became Otsego County in 1825. In 1836, the town was incorporated as a village. On March 20, 1849, it received a post office from Lansingburgh Village when Lansingburgh lost its status as an independent village after incorporation into Troy. In 1892, residents voted to name their town for General George Washington within two weeks of his death. The post office remained at Olean until it closed on October 15th, 1893 due to low population growth; however mail still reached the town until January 1st 1895 because Livingston County had no mail service between Troy and Olean. In 1907-08 there were several large wildfires which destroyed most of the buildings and crops near the lakeshore; however no one was killed or injured in these fires although some extensive damage occurred including loss of property valued at over $1 million dollars (£620 thousand). The Great Depression led to significant reductions in population and employment throughout Otsego County during 1932-1933 affecting both commercial and agricultural businesses; this also affected neighboring towns such as Auburn and Lansingburgh where residents migrated for work opportunities during this time period. After reaching its peak during World War II with an increase in export business due to increased production at nearbyANTM Air Force Base (later Syracuse), local businesses began to decline again following the war's ending but have since slowly regained their former level of activity thanks to new economic development around Syracuse - another major center for manufacturing during those years - making Olean once again one of country's most economically active communities outside larger cities withstood various challenges throughout its history including beingarpostalewithin2weeksofhisdeathbeforeitclosedonOctober15th 1893duetolowpopulationgrowth; howevermailstillreachthetownuntilJanuary1st 1895becauseLivingstonCountyhadnomailservicebetweenTroyandOlean."
