Olean is part of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what became Olean was Abram Cushing and his family who arrived in 1795. The first post office was established here on November 11, 1807. In 1814, the town was renamed after General Lafayette because he had helped to rename Poughkeepsie during the War of 1812. The village of Olean developed around three schools which were built between 1825 and 1830 - Deaconess Academy (1825), Union Seminary (1830), and Saint Michael's College (1835). In 1868 it became part of Chenango County when it was created from parts of Dutchess and Tioga Counties. On April 15th 1870, theNY Central Railroad came through this area with its first trackage being laid just north of today's Main Street intersection - one year before its merger into Penn Central Railroad The Village lost much of its population as a result of World War II with many leaving for other places such as Buffalo or Syracuse due to wartime shortages in food and housing; however some remain to this day including an active fire department On July 10th 1957, namesake Colonel John Wirtz donated land to form what would become Stroudsburg State Park which contains over 19 miles (30 kilometers) of hiking trails as well as a golf course Today there are over 350 residents living within easy reachof various services like supermarkets/restaurants/ transportation etc., making Olean oneOf THE most vibrant small villages remaining in upstate New York
