Olean, New York is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. The history of Olean dates back to 1792 when it was part of Albany County. Olean was incorporated as a town on August 15, 1825. The first settler in what would be Olean was John Fenton and his family who platted the area around what is now the southeast corner of Main and Center Streets in 1827. In 1828-29 Nathaniel Jarvis Simons built a log cabin near present-day Market Street and Center Avenue. A post office called "Olenehan" was established in 1839 by Governor Edward Everett Ellsworth with the name changed to "Olean" on February 21st that year. This location served as the town's central square until 1860 when it moved to its current location south of Main Street east of Center Avenue. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln visited Olean while he prepared for his inauguration as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President. At this time there were only two buildings in town: the old schoolhouse (now an apartment complex) on South Main Street and Mrs. Lincoln's home on North Main Street (now occupied by PNC Bank). Mrs Lincoln later donated her home to the town for use as a public library which opened in 1923 . On November 12th 1865 Union General Nelson Johnson arrived at Poughkeepsie from Canada after successfully redeeming parole from Confederate General Robert Ewell at Fort Erie on October 19th that year; heading north towards Niagara Falls via Buffalo Bayou . After Johnson's arrival many people gathered around his wagon whereupon he asked one man if he could ride into Olean with him – this man became known as "the Bicycle King". After spending some time at Mrs Lincoln's house local farmer James Hickey donated land off Centre Avenue between First and Second streets for an Agricultural Institute which opened its doors on January 6th 1870 under headmaster Wm Alexander Eaton; this institution became known as Bard College after Bard University located nearby in Annandale-on-Hudson . As late as 1910 approximately 25% of all businesses in town were agricultural enterprises such as farmers stores, feed stores, hay barns & coops etc., while 75% consisted of small retail businesses including several grocery stores/bakery outlets etc., many along Third or Fourth Streets downtown responsible for providing nearly all evening shopping needs within walking distance during most seasons

After the war ended in 1945, local businesses transitioned to other industries such as agriculture and tourism. In recent years, however, Olean has seen increased development with several high-profile projects underway such as an airport and convention center
