Olean was settled by Germans in 1795 and named after Lake Ontario. The first post office in Olean was established on February 12, 1827. The town began to take form as a village in 1849 and became an incorporated city on July 1, 1860. As an incorporated city it received full power to levy its own taxes and make its own decisions with respect to governmental affairs including but not limited to elections and public works. On February 14, 1896 Olean had its first fire when five men set a small wood stove on fire while cooking dinner inside their house. In 1925 the City of Olean merged with the village of North Tonawanda to create one municipality with a population of over 20,000 people which included much of what is now downtown Olean as well as parts of South Tonawanda and Webster townships. In 1927 the name for both municipalities was changed from "Onondaga" (the original spelling) to "Olean". In 1951 that municipality amalgamated with two other municipalities- One being Syracuse and One being East Rochester- forming one new municipality with a population exceeding 50,000 people- Onondaga County

The first settler in what became Olean was Nicholas Leddy, who arrived in 1812. In 1824, John Aiken established a sawmill on the creek and named it after himself. Other early residents included Moses Brown and his family from Vermont; Gideon Granger from Massachusetts; and Reverend Ebenezer Goodrich from New York City. The Town of Olean was organized by an act of the New York State Legislature on February 14, 1825. At its creation, it consisted of just over one-half square mile (0.8 km2). The original village had a total population of just under eighty souls. By 1830, however, there were over two hundred settlers living in what would eventually become Olean Village proper. The first school opened in what is now the library on May 25th of that year as part of a larger system that Included Crown Point Academy which opened July 1st1830 also operated outoftheOldSchoolHouse which still stands todaynorthwest cornerof Main Streetand High Street
Olean was first settled in 1785 by the Dutch. The name comes from a small stream that runs through the town. In 1827, Olean became a part of Albany County and was renamed Amherst. On October 8, 1839, it passed to Erie County and was renamed Olean again.
