Olean is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Today there are several contributing factors to make up that history including: its location on Route 9W bordering Schenectady County and east of Interstate 95; its close proximity to Utica; and its rich cultural heritage dating back to when Oneonta was an agricultural society with two churches and three schools serving more than 60 families before it became a village in 1868 with just six residents. Olean is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is the easternmost town in Erie County. The village of Olean proper is located east of the town and south of the village of Rome. The first settler in what would become Olean was Nicholas Fenton in 1798. In 1827, John Leland bought land from Nicholas Fenton for $15 per acre. Leland named his new settlement after his father-in-law, who had also settled there in 1817: Oswego (Otsego) Village. The townsite was laid out by James Kapp and patented to him on July 26, 1830. By 1840, most of the settlers had departed for other parts of New York following gold discoveries at Rochester and Utica; only a few remained to populate Olean. In 1846–47 Jens Jensen began construction on what would become Empire State Park; it opened to the public in 1899 as part of the park system created by Senator Andrew Johnson based on recommendations made by General Robert Eichelberger during his tour of New York state that year. Olean became an incorporated village on May 15, 1898; it united with Rome on January 1st, 1901 under one government name but kept its own identity until 1954 when both villages were combined into one municipality under then Chairman Julius Rosenwald's leadership as an experiment designed to improve municipal services and reduce corruption within local governments throughout America's "rust belt."
