The town was founded in 1876 by Scottish settler John McLaren and named after his native village of O'Neill on the Firth of Lough corrie in Ireland. It began as a small farming community with only seventeen residents when it became an incorporated municipality in 1898. In 1916, during World War I, Olean joined the United States as a result of President Woodrow Wilson's policy of apportioning military personnel among various nations on the basis of their size and resources. The town has since become known for its cheese production and other agricultural products such as apples, cornmeal and potatoes. In 1932, commercial fishing rights were acquired by Chenango County from J.P Morgan & Company for $5 million dollars which led to construction of the first local water supply system in Chenango County - now known as Lake Ontario Water Supply District No. 3 - also called North Turkey Creek Valley trout hatchery dam On July 1st 1944 (the day before World War II ended), during World War II Olean became an official Japanese American Internment Camp located on nearby Stormville Road near present-day White Sands Missile Range

Olean, New York is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 1,436 at the 2010 census. Olean is one of the five towns in Chemung County that are part of the chemistry and mining towns of Niagara Falls. The mines closed in 1978. The first settler in what is now Olean was Nicholas Connick in 1792. He patented 15 acres (6 ha) of land on the west side of Beaver Creek for £5 per acre (0.30 m2). In 1824, David Boyd established a gristmill on Beaver Creek and named it after his father-in-law, Honorable John Boyd of Bellefontaine, Kentucky. A post office called Boydville was established at this site in 1828; it remained in operation until 1898. In 1830, Isaac Franks settled near what is now Olean and started a flourmill on the east side of Beaver Creek. By 1840 there were twenty mills operating around Olean with an average capacity of 30000 bushels (1800 metric tons) per day; by 1870 there were only two mills left operational with an average capacity of 104000 bushels (2500 metric tons) per day! In 1831, George Noyes erected a school and store building on lands patented to him by Nicholas Connick and began selling groceries from his store to settlers living around Olean and other villages along the then known route between Buffalo and Albany via what is now Newark Junction Road. This early pioneer stage road still exists as part of today's routing between Buffalo/Albany/Newark Junction Road/Cheektowaga Avenue
