Olean is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. Olean is located on the Chenango River east of Kingston and west of Ionia. The first settler in what would become Olean was Daniel Goodrich in 1796. He named his land "Goodrich's Flats", after himself and his father-in-law, Daniel Goodrich. In 1807, John Sweeny bought from Goodrich and founded the village of Sweeny's Mills on the flats that he had purchased from Daniel Goodrich. On December 3, 1809, John Sweeny granted to his nephew Amos Sweeny two hundred acres (20 hectares) of land for $200. The site became known as Sweeny's Mills Park today. In 1824, Henry Hudson landed on Long Island Sound ferrying goods upriver to Syracuse and points beyond with four ships called the Hontenay, HecateIIIIIIIII (Hudson), Discovery (Discovery), and Enterprise (Empire). His route lay through present-day Olean village before crossing the Chenango River into nearby Kingston where he stopped for water at Goodrich's Flats then continued downriver to Albany where he unloaded his cargo at Castlefield Wharf before continuing northward to Kingston again. After landing here Hudson set up camp near what is now Main Street and built a small cabin there which served as his headquarters until June 25th when he moved inland due to bad weather conditions at Kingston Ferry Landing on Lake Ontario - still part of present day Monroe County - where he remained until September 8th when it rained so heavily that all but one boat could not get across because of lack of bridges or shallow water caused by rapids near Niagara Falls! Hudson abandoned this plan to explore further northeast instead and returned home only after finding a route over the falls using an existing Native American pathfinder trail! A post office called Olean was established in 1827 by commissioners appointed by President James Kansa under Governor David Humphreys; it operated until 1840. In 1830s Seely & Garvey opened a grocery store downtown which soon became well known for its fresh produce items including tomatoes grown onsite right next door to their storefront windows! The town began rapid growth during the early 19th century with new homes being erected throughout centralia Township along Chenango Avenue such as: Union Depot Road/Fenton Road – later renamed Broadway Avenue – becoming one block wide between Main Street/Broadway Boulevard/Washington Avenue; Indianola Ave./Wichita Ave.–now Erie Blvd./I-87 East; Southwick Rd./Watertown Rd.–now I-81 East; Clinton Ave./Clinton Road–now Clarkson Ave.–all leading directly out onto Chenango Avenue creating one large boulevard like street grid with multiple blocks side streets running perpendicular thereto serving as local streets nameakes today even though most homes were built long ago bastardized versions of traditional Dutch architecture often incorporating adobe bricks without any external stone work typical features found elsewhere in North America...Today these same streets are some 50 years old oldest extant example still in existence within same municipality

Olean is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 6,463 at the 2010 census. Olean is located on the east side of Chemung River and on the border of Cheboygan County to the south. The first European settlers in what is now Olean were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1624. The name "Olean" comes from Onondaga Lake and means "place of many small islands." In 1814, Genesee County was created from parts of Chemung and Oswego counties. Olean was part of that county until it became part of Chemung County in 1822. The name "Chemung" came from a word meaning "wild rice" or "a kind of corn." In 1825, the village of Northfield was organized as an independent village withinChemung County. Despite its location on the border with other counties, Olean developed relatively slowly until after World War II when new development began pouring into the area due to industrialization and increased travel by people looking for jobs near Buffalo and Rochester. As more people moved into towns along I-80 (the then-new interstate), bars started opening up around I-86 which made traveling between chemung county towns much easier than it had been before; this also led to an increase in nightlife as drivers could now find rest stops without having to worry about getting lost or driving all night back home. This growth has continued over time as well – currently there are over 25 businesses open late at night in Olean alone! On July 1st, 2006, organized religion became legal in New York state following passage by then Governor Eliot Spitzer through his executive order No 012
On October 26, 1792, the town of Olean was founded by a group of farmers in the area. The settlers were led by Peter Schermerhorn and John Schermerhorn. The town was originally named after Mount Achaean, which is located in modern-day Greece. In 1812, the name was changed to New York after the statehood of New York State.
