In response, Governor Nelson Peake ordered an investigation into the cause of these problems which found that many local businesses were not taking necessary precautions against flooding resulting from heavy rains that season. As a result, government investment beganto focus on repairing or replacing old infrastructure throughout Upstate New York rather than developing new settlements near major highways. With this approach, Olean regained some level of importance within Local government while also preserving important aspects of its rural character
Olean was a town in the vicinity of Syracuse, New York, United States. The first permanent settler in what is now Olean was Nicholas Hogg in 1792. The town was named after Colonel George Clinton's family estate on the eastern side of Mohawk Valley. It had a population of about 100 residents by 1800. In 1814, part of the Town of Oswego and the entire Erie Canal Zone were annexed to Syracuse by act of Congress; as a result, Olean lost its status as an incorporated village; however, it continued to be known as "The Borough" until 1954.
