The town was first settled in 1792 by colonists from Ulster who were looking for land to expand their holdings after they were expelled from Ireland. Olean was chartered on July 10, 1825 and named for Colonel John A. O'Leary of that year's Irish Rebellion against British rule. The town had its first post office in 1827 and first store in 1830. It became an incorporated village on January 1, 1889. Olean has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War era when it served as a military outpost along the border between Canada and America. In 1794 General George Washington lodged with his forces here during his campaign against France and he used Olean as headquarters for operations near Lake Erie until he moved westward into Canada later that year. It was also during this time that Major James Morris built one of the first homes in what would become Olean – a log cabin known as "Morris's Cabin". One of Morris's sons built another home there some time later which still stands today - this structure is now known as "Samuel Morse House". Held annually since 1824 (the date of incorporation), the Oshkosh Exposition & Grange Fair is one of North America's largest agricultural shows featuring exhibitors from all over the world and attracting more than 150,000 visitors each year! These riots ultimately led to increased pressure on Mayor James Jaffe to create harsher anti-riot laws than were currently allowed by law or practice at the time - these laws would come to be known as "Jaffe Rules". This increased pressure eventually led to Jaffe's ouster from office in 1922 and his replacement by Alfred Murchison Jr.. Murchison made efforts to address social unrest but also faced increasing Republican Party control over municipal affairs which further undermined his authority within city limits; however, he did manage to keep Syracuse afloat through various financial initiatives such as forming a waterworks corporation and creating several parks including Carle Park (now part of High School.) Following Murchison's death in 1928, local politics again became polarized with strong Democratic Party control over most aspects of civic life while Republicans gained power within municipal government - this situation would not change until after Democrat Raymond Fenton took office as mayor in 1942 following World War II’s end). Under Fenton’s leadership, many new programs were enacted aimed at addressing social unrest such as providing job opportunities for veterans returning home from World War II while also creating new housing developments throughout downtown along with significant investments into public transportation which helped contribute significantly to Syracuse’s postwar growth."
