Olean is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Olean is part of the Binghamton-Auburn-New Rochelle metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Olean was John Day on July 12, 1785. Day and his family were among the earliest pioneers to reside in this region of what is now Monroe County. The first school opened in Olean on October 7, 1814 and operated for three months while a log cabin was built to house the teachers. In 1827–28, a gristmill was founded by Nicholas Ladd and became known as the "First Mill" because it started production of flour for local markets. In 1835, when farmers began developing land around the mill site and nearby springs, they named their new community after General George Washington's antagonist during his American Revolution: Colonel William Howe's town of Cambridge (now Auburn). On November 15th that year, voters approved an act naming their new village after Howe's victory at Saratoga Creek; however no buildings were built until 1865 when Thacher du Pont constructed the first store building on Main Street. A post office called Olean was established at this location on December 1st, 1865; it remained open until 1953 when it was moved to Binghamton. In 1830s John Day erected a small wood frame cottage near present day East Main Street and South Park Avenue which he called "The White House". He died there in 1834 aged 73 years from natural causes due to exposure to the cold winter weather conditions prevailing then as well as tuberculosis which he had contracted while working westward across Canada with an army unit prior to his return home sickly from battle at Mexico City two years earlier - he had been one of only six Americans ever decorated with knighthoods during that conflict (the others include Ulysses S Grant). After John Day's death his widow erected additional frames around her old cottage over time becoming known as The Cottage Grove or simply "The Grove." Mrs. Day passed away in 1886 but her husband's remains are still interred there today within view of various tree stands located around campus (along with those of other early settlers) overlooking The White House mentioned above including many children who played within sight of him every day back then such as Martha Dare who attended school just steps away from where she lives still today! Today also marks one hundred years since locally made ice cream introduced into Chenango Valley by Mrs Evelyn Rockefeller finally making its way upstate NY via Uniondale whence we enjoy this delicious treat right here at our doorstep!
