Olean, New York is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Olean was founded by Dutch settlers in 1664. The name means "peninsula" or "island". The first settler in what is now Olean was Nicholas Van Dorp and his family who arrived on July 10, 1664 from Amsterdam via the Mayflower. They were the only European family to live in what would later become Olean. There were also several Indian families that lived there at the time but they all left by 1668 when English settlers began arriving and they no longer needed their assistance. In 1712 John Middleton established a mill here which continued operating until 1827 when it burned down due to a lightning strike. In 1824 Josephine Burchardt donated land for a school and library near her home which still stands today as the Josephine Burchardt School District No. 4 Library System building located at 358 Main Street in Olean - one of only three remaining examples of Beaux Arts architecture from this period in upstate New York (the others being Niagara Falls' George Washington University Campus and Oneida Lake's Union Hall). The other two buildings are both now used as apartment complexes: one on Main Street across from the library and another off Court Road just outside of town limits on an old agricultural parcel now known as Harvey Farmstead Agricultural Land #2 (formerly Hendershot's Pond). In 1865 local Quaker John Smeaton donated land east of town for an Episcopal church which would eventually become St Andrews Episcopal Church; however, construction did not begin until 1868 after Smeaton's death because of objections from some residents who felt that such an enormous project should have been funded by taxes rather than through donations from individuals like Smeaton. Assembling lumber for future churches took over much of the town's economy during this time so progress did not continue along this path until after Smeaton's death despite protests by some locals who felt that such large projects should be funded with public money instead of private donations like Smeaton had done originally Aftermath of Civil War: Reconstruction Era In 1865-1876 When Reconstruction ended following America’s Civil War, many white Northerners decided to move back into rural areas while African Americans migrated southward into newly created black republics like Haiti, Cuba and points westward where opportunity existed beyond anything experienced north of slavery or draft registration quotas set by southern states resulting in mass migration within slave-based economies creating new social formations including Black ghettos scattered throughout northern industrial cities analogous to those found in South Africa before World War II . Many young native men seeking opportunities lost out during Reconstruction years finding employment elsewhere unable to return home once Freedmen’s Bureau regulations made it difficult or impossible to find traditional farm workability especially if women bore children..
