The new town site was surveyed by Ebenezer Chapman and laid out by him and Augustus Kelley on October 12, 1830; it included parts of present-day Olean within limits granted them by act January 3 following that year's general election which had resulted in James Kieft becoming governor over Robert Livingston’s objections to hislengery under Livingston’s successor Andrew Johnson In 1833-34 John Ariton built a millrace across Canandaigua Creek from what is now North Park Road to power his new sawmill operated out of what are now Girdler Road and East Main Street buildings today still standing although much damage has been done over time resulting from flooding during winter rains . In 1840-41 Eli Whitney erected two gristmills at this point also one still stands today west side road between East Main Street/Girdler Road/ Whitney Lane and North Park Road off current US 131 north side road This milling activity led to rapid growth hereabouts withorgeous views so lots more people started moving into this area soon followed
