Ogdensburg is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 7,384 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Ogdensburg arrived in 1785, and by 1800 there were four or five families living here. In 1802 there were twenty-one people living in this small community on the east side of the Stroudsburg Creek. There was no school until 1824 and only one store until 1830. In 1831 a group of men from Canada came overland to what is now Ogdensburg and started a farm here. They named their settlement Unadilla after Unadilla Lake which they found near Niagara Falls. This area was mostly swampy with heavy forest growth until about 1840 when some farmers began to clear land and build log buildings (the first sawmill being built here in 1840). In 1847 two men from Syracuse bought some land at the headwaters of the Stroudsburg Creek for $100 and began to clear it for farming purposes. From this site they developed a prosperous business that continues today: running a general store, wagon shop, blacksmith shop, cheese factory (1859), bakery (1860), candy factory (1868), eggs production plant (1912), lumberyard (1925) and numerous other businesses over many years. A post office called Ogdensburg was established in 1848; it remained open until 1862 when it was replaced by Buffalo . The name change reflects frontier culture where "ogdens" meant 'farmer' or 'townshend'. After Buffalo became an independent city in 1898 its citizens voted to change their name back to Ogdensburg after experiencing bad luck while trying to get another word entered into the new city charter – finally settling upon "Ogdensburgh" because that is how they had been known by their previous owners before they moved away from Buffalo . According to the 2000 census, 5% of New Yorkers identify as Native American; however no official records exist tracing this identity back any further than early eighteenth century raids on Iroquois villages west of Albany led by General George Washington's troops during his War for Independence

Ogdensburg is a small town in upstate New York, about sixty miles (100 km) northeast of Buffalo. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Ogdensburg is one of the five towns that make up the town of Tonawanda. The first European to visit what is now Ogdensburg was Robinson Crusoe in 1624. The first permanent settler in what is now Ogdensburg was John Day on February 12, 1788. At that time there were only a few houses and no mills because the area lacked water power. In 1814, George Stephenson built the first steamboat in this area when he constructed the Raritan River Railroad from Scranton to Tonawanda; it became known as "the Stephenson Line". In 1857, an act by Ulysses S. Grant created four new towns within Ontario County: Ontario Falls, Nanticoke, Seneca Falls and Oswego; all except for Nanticoke were incorporated on December 5th of that year. On January 1st of 1858 Anthony Ladd acquired title to land east of present-day Ogdensburg on which he founded what would become his largest business—a general store and post office called Ladd's Trading Post which opened on November 11th of that year. On October 21st, 1861 James Hogg arrived from Canada with his family after spending several years prospecting for land in central New York State; he discovered new coal mines near where today's Capital District stands today. On November 6th1861 Hogg donated $5 000 to build a schoolhouse and other infrastructure for the community located near where Main Street meets Gregory Boulevard; this donation became known as "Hogg's Hill". It wasn't until 1888 when Wm C Sheehan arrived from Ireland with his wife Jane who had settled down in Upstate New York; they started a grocery store on Main Street which later became known as Sheehan’s Department Store. In 1893 Tully’s Tavern opened on Northampton Avenue serving refreshments during American President Grover Cleveland’s annual trip through Upstate New York (he stayed at nearby Saratoga Springs). A post office called White Plains Junction was established at what is now Westfield Shopping Center on Main Street opposite Sheehan’s Department Store in 1912; it closed its doors in 1974 but has been used as a convenience store since then! In 1925 Erie Railroad owner General Electric began construction of their electric line northwest from Buffalo proper connecting Niagara Falls with Buffalo viaTonawanda and Oswego; due to high demand for freight transportation over part or all of this line service was discontinued between Tonawanda and Buffalo effective May 25th 1927 leaving only passenger trains operating between those two points! Consequently many businesses along Route 9E converted into residences or apartments during this time including most notably Sheehan’s Department Store which continued operations despite being without electricity until 1976! On July 15th1927 local resident Odd Fellows Lodge #2 met at Mohawk Park located southeast of downtown Ogdensburg to discuss forming their own government separate from county government following county-wide tax changes passed by politicians under Governor Roscoe Arbuckle Jr.; these deliberations led ultimately to the establishmentof the Town Council form 1937
