It is part of the Syracuse–Albany-New Rochelle, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John Ogdens and erected on a Hennepin River bottoms tract in 1795. In 1827 the town was removed to its present site by the opening of the Erie Canal. In 1846 Ogdensburg became a city with a population of around 20,000 people when Queen Victoria granted it city status. On July 15, 1870 as part of an effort to raise money for soldiers fighting in Mexico during the American Civil War, citizens raised $11 million from sale of post office shares and other securities. This paved the way for Rochester's entry into the Union as an independent city on November 8 that year. The following year – December 4th – Rochester's first mayoral election took place after incorporation; Abram Hewitt won with over 60% of the vote against incumbent Mayor George Hanna (D). In 1906 Ogdensburg annexed neighbouring village of Greece and renamed it Greece Townships No 2 and 3 together with Addison Township No 1 which made up what would become Greece Village today although Addison Township still has its own government and school district separate from those in Ogdensburg proper. After World War II much growth occurred within Ogdensburgh due to heavy industry such as aluminum smelting which stimulated new construction throughouttown while also contributing greatly to overall development across Oneida County

The name Ogdensburg comes from Odessa, Russia. The first settlers in what is now Ogdensburg were German immigrants who came to America in 1809. They made their home on the banks of the Susquehanna River. In 1820, they moved to a new location on high ground near present-day Goshen and built a log cabin known as "Herschel's Cabin". They developed a grocery business and later erected a frame house which served as their courthouse until 1857 when it burned down. In 1830, John Herschel married Anna Spielberg from Germany; they had two children: John Herschel (1831–1905) and Anna Spielberg Herschel (1833–1900). Anna Spielberg Herschel married George Bemis in 1850 and they had four children: George Bemis (1851–1921), Lillian Bemis (1854–1945), John J. Bemis (1858–1945), and Esther Bemis (1860–1939). After the death of his wife in 1900, George Bemis married Ida Ann Fenton in 1911; they had one child: Barbara Fenton Cramer born December 4th 1912 at Oswego Falls Nursing Home in Oswego Falls NY. In 1916 he became an insurance salesman for Citizens life insurance company before retiring to live at 336 Main Street where he died on May 3rd 1978 after many years illness due to leukemia
Ogdensburg was founded in 1784 by Nicholas Ogdensburg and his wife Rebecca. It is the oldest continuously inhabited incorporated town in New York State. The town was named for Nicholas Ogdensburg, a Revolutionary War veteran who had served as an aide to General George Washington.
