Ogdensburg is a village in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is the junction of NY-25 and NY-14. Ogdensburg is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario. The village formed from part of the town of Bolton in 1835 and was named for General James O'Gdensburg (1769–1836), a hero of the War of 1812 who had fought in Canada and been given an award by President James K. Polk. The first settler, John Whitehurst, arrived in 1837 and built his log cabin on what is now State Route 25 between present day Main Street (north) and Harrison Road (south). A post office called Bolton was established in 1840, but it was closed by 1846 because no one wanted to take advantage of its mail service. In 1850, Andrew Jakes moved to Ogdensburg with his family from Rochester, New York; he platted what would become Village Green along today's east side of Main Street in anticipation that other settlers would follow his lead. By 1860, there were 12 families living here including 6 Friends Meeting Houses and 5 blacksmiths shops which served as centers for trade during the slave trade era. In 1865 Union General George Armstrong Custer visited this area while campaigning against Confederate forces west of Buffalo Niagara Falls leading up to the Battle of Perrysburg which ended slavery south within Ohio & Indiana - thus ending much bloodshed along those borderlands preceding & following American Civil War! During Reconstruction Era until 1949 when New York became a state again - most all white residents left for various reasons such as political correctness or racism towards people who still lived here despite being "colored". However some new arrivals did form civil rights organizations like The National Association for Colored Americans (NACA) before moving out altogether after Brown v Boardwalk decision made non-white people unable to apply for certain government services such as police protection etc... The name Ogdensburg is derived from the French words "Ogni" meaning "everywhere," and "burgh" meaning town or village. The first permanent settler in what would become Ogdensburg was Nicholas Biddle in 1785. In 1807, John Smeaton bought of land from Nicholas Biddle and erected the firstadobe house on present-day Main Street in what would become Ogdensburg. In 1812, Abraham Lincoln passed through the area on his way to battle at Ford's Theatre and later that year purchased what is now Second Avenue from James A. Dixon for $1,000. Ten years later, on July 20th, 1836 Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd Lincoln in a private ceremony at the home of Drury Lane Agency owner Caleb Carruths. In 1846 Nathan Bedford Forrest leased 4 acres (1 km²) of ground from Elijah Hicks to form what would become Forrest Park Golf Course; he had beengiven it by General William Tecumseh Sherman as part of his gift to Stonington for incorporation into Tennessee when Sherman became president of America in 1865. On October 16th 1863 Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant burned down Fort Hays during an attack against Confederate lines near present-day Haysville
