Ogdensburg is a small town in upstate New York, located on the Mohawk River. The population was 3,095 at the 2010 census. It is the only village in Ogdensburg Township and it is part of the Oneonta-Syracuse, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Ogdensburg" is derived from an Algonquian word meaning "upper fortification." The first European to visit Ogdensburg was John Eliot Morison in 1814, when he surveyed and named the town after General James Monroe. In 1824, Henry Sloane bought land at what is now Main Street and Boulevard for $1,000. He built a house there which still stands today known as Sloane House No. 1. In 1850, Jephson & Sons Machine Shop started operations in Ogdensburgh with two machinesmiths working each day. By 1861, they had increased their production to 10 machinesmiths per day and were making parts for locomotives and other machinery used by businesses throughout upstate New York. In 1898, construction began on what would become the first public high school in Upstate New York when YMCA Hall (now North High School) was built on land donated by Judge Augustus Waugh of Oneonta. Classes were held at YMCA Hall until 1923 when a new school building was constructed on Main Street (later renamed Broad Street). That building served as the high school until 1959 when Central High School opened its doors to students from all over Upstate New York who could not attend local schools due to lack of space or money. In 1924–1928, work began on upgrading ovens at local shoe factories for use by farmers in Syracuse so that they could produce more goods without having to go out of their way to buy fresh air or ship goods back home from abroad. This project became known as simply “Shoe Project” because most of the products produced were shoes – mostly leather shoes – rather than anything else during those years. When finished, this project added more than 2 acres (1 hectare) to downtown Ogdensburgh! Another important event that took place during those years was World War II when many residents enlisted in military service and some even went off into battle overseas while their families stayed behind to help manage farm chores or look after children while their parents fought overseas; one such resident was Mrs.—? Shepard who served with distinction both in Europe and America during World War II as a member of Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps #161st Infantry Regiment wearing civilian clothing under her husband’s uniform! There have been many smaller changes over time that have made Ogdensburgh unique; some examples include: having its own post office since 1907 (!), becoming a village status upon incorporation in 1955 (!), being designated an official historic site within the Oneonta-Syracuse area following designation by then-Governor Nelson Rockefeller(!), hosting annual Arts & Craft Fairivals starting in 1966 (!), becoming recognized nationally for its awarded trout fishing spots around town beginning in 1988 (!), receiving recognition from Governor Cuomo as “America's Best Place To Fish Trout” starting in 2013 (!), becoming home to both Oneonta College District Technical Institute (opened fall 2014) and Oneonta County Correctional Facility (opened fall 2015), being host city for several state fairs including State Fair Of New York 2016(*!), being certified “Greenest Village In The United States Of America” (#2 out OF 506*)
In 1814, the town of Ogdensburg was chartered by George Washington and named for General James Ogdensburg. The first settler in what is now Ogdensburg was Isaac Holmes, who arrived in 1797. The town rapidly grew as a result of its location on the Susquehanna River. In 1824, the U.S. government decided to move the seat of justice from Philadelphia to New York City due to overcrowding in that city. Accordingly, the town became part of New York City and changed its name to Ogdensburg.
