Ogdensburg is a town in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester, New York metropolitan area. Ogdensburg was founded in 1800 by Major General George Washington and Colonel Nicholas Biddle as Cadmus Ferry landing on the Raphia River for trade with Canada. The name "Ogdensburg" was derived from Englishman John Ogden's land grant of 1784 to his wife Hannah de Grave. The first settler in what is now Ogdensburg was Nicholas Biddle who built a log cabin on speculation that he would find rich soil there. He did not achieve his goal but introduced farming to this area and named his farm "Biddle's Land". In 1814 he married Lydia Morrissey and their home became known as the Morrissey House which still stands today. Their son George Washington Biddle also lived here and worked on the farm until 1830 when he moved to Rochester to become a farmer himself. In 1842 Anthony Crouse opened a store in what is now downtown Ogdensburg which became one of the most successful businesses in town during its early years. The store continued operations until 1956 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by an arsonist. Thanks to Anthony Crouse's generosity many local businesses were able to keep their doors open during that time period including Mr.'s Pizza which has been located here since 1957! In 1898 Alexander Graham Bell came through town on business related to telephone installation work and met with townspeople who showed him around before taking him back upriver for dinner at Mrs.'s house where he had dinner with her husband Henry Ford! Afterwards they took a boat back downstream for further research purposes! In 1916 local resident Dorothy Day wrote her famous book "The Great Gatsby" set within the fictional community of Daisy Buchanan while living in nearby West Egg (now part of Syracuse). She spent several weeks living among these people before returning home and publishing her findings after visiting again two months later! This event helped give birth much later that year to then-newcomer Buffalo Bill Cody who began working for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show traveling throughout upstate New York along Route 9! It wasn't until 1949 that interstate highway 95 passed through town making it easier for residents access all those great shopping opportunities outside of their homes now near Interstate 81!!!!!
