Dutch traders arrived later that year and called it "Hudson's Bay". In 1777, British General John Sullivan erected a fort on the site of present day Albany to protect against American independence movements during the American Revolution. The town was incorporated as part of Troy on November 3, 1787. In 1814, construction began on an Erie Canal which connected Lake Ontario with Buffalo Harbor. By 1825, the canal had been completed and became one of America's great transportation corridors. As more people moved into towns along the canal routes such as Ogdensburg and Lockport, businesses developed to support these growths. With increased trade came increased industry including lumbering and manufacturing along with new residential streets such as Main Street and Prospect Avenue built specifically for commercial purposes. During World War II, many businesses closed due to wartime shortages but many others thrived due to military contracts and other wartime demand for goods from abroad. After the war ended in 1945, many factories closed again but some kept going through various incarnations until they were all gone by 1990 when they merged into Celanese Corporation which still exists today as one of America’s leading industrial manufacturers

In 1973, ConAgra Foods acquired all of the assets of Alexander’s grocery store in nearby Scranton before merging it with its rival Peet’s Coffee Company creating what is now known as Peet’s Coffee & Tea Company Incorporated (PCTC). This acquisition led to increased business activity at local factories such as those at Skolnicki Paper Products and Wiegand Paper Manufacturing Company which were combined into McKesson Corporation in 1984. In 1990, PCTC merged with United Parcel Service (UPS) forming McKesson UPS Corporation. This merger led to increased competition among parcel carriers and further job losses for longtime employees at local factories such as Skolnicki Paper Products and Wiegand Paper Manufacturing Company which were combined into McKesson Corp.. However, this consolidation also resulted in new opportunities forSKOLNICKI PRODUCTS CO., LTD.* [*not included] to establish itself as a leading paper products company within McKesson UPS Corporation..
