Ogdensburg, New York is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. Ogdensburg is part of the Rochester–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1814, Captain John Stevens and his party founded the village of Ogdensburg on the east side of the Mohawk River between Cayuga and Seneca Counties. The first stores were built there in 1814 by Captain Stevens's men and other settlers who had accompanied him on his survey of the area. The town was platted in 1831 when Colonel James Kieft purchased land in what is now Monroe County from Nicholas Schermerhorn. Kieft named it after General George Washington's birthplace (the Gadsden Purchase). The first school buildings were built there in 1832 by then-Senator Isaac Brockman as part of a larger program to build schools throughout Monroe County. By 1840, Ogdensburg had a post office and two churches: First Methodist Episcopal (founded 1792) and Second Presbyterian (founded 1830). In 1845, Stephen Auld became sheriff of Monroe County after serving as attorney general for three years under Governor Winthrop Channing. Auld was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election in that year but he served out his term until November 3, 1850 when he was succeeded by Judge John Purdy. On November 3rd Judge Purdy also died suddenly; one account has him killed while hunting near Geneva Lake near Syracuse NY while another says he fell into a coma from heart disease brought on by stress over county government reforms put forth by Governor Andrew Johnson At this time Ogdensburgh had only six residents; four men who lived off farming profits and two women who did domestic chores for their male householders or husbandsfolk The next year saw some growth with construction of a gristmill which made flour available to local farmers When railroad service arrived in 1865 following the completion of the Erie Canal through those parts of New York state not yet covered by that route, increasing numbers of people began to move into Ogdensburgh including many Irish immigrants who had been recruited during Reconstruction efforts across America In 1870 Samuel Morse moved from Hartford Connecticut to start transmitting messages over Morse Code from his home on Main Street through underground cables to Albany NY starting up what would eventually become Verizon Communications
