In 1893 the first diesel locomotive was introduced on the Ogdensburg Railroad.
Ogdensburg is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 7,491 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Mohawk word "onga" meaning place for trade or commerce. The first settlers in the area were farmers who arrived around 1784. They named their settlement after Ogdensburg Township which they had recently acquired from the surrounding counties. soon after, the first post office was established in the town and by 1812 it had grown to include a gristmill and sawmills as well as several stores. By 1825, there were also three churches and two schools in Ogdensburg. The Panic of 1837 destroyed most of what little commerce had been done along with many jobs that depended on it in this region so businesses stopped operating completely or went out of business quickly. However, an infusion of new arrivals (mainly Germans) revived some economic activity by 1840 and by 1850 Ogdensburg boasted six shops, four churches and twelve schools including one high school which functioned as a college until 1861 when it became part of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). In 1860-1861 RIT constructed a new campus south of town to serve students from neighboring towns such as Rome and Suffield whose homes lay within walking distance of its doors. These days much of what once constituted downtown Ogdensburg now functions as residential neighborhoods including parts adjacent to Interstate 81 just east of town line while other sections are primarily served by I-81 Business Loop (I-865). Still others have formed outside downtown: The former Clinton Hotel complex near I-81's exit 169 forms part today's vibrant Greektown section while elsewhere Weehawken has developed into an upscale community complete with luxury apartments built on land formerly used for grain storage facilities

American forces led by Colonel John Jervis destroyed part of the French fleet off shore and drove them ashore near what is now Monroe Township on 30 October 1814. Because of this victory, Ulysses S. Grant was acclaimed as "the butcher of Orleans". One hundred years later, in 1912, when New York State became a United States state, Ogdensburgh voted to become one of its fourteen townships with voting rights according to sectional lines because it lay along Yankee Patent No. 1 (later called genessee). Residents here banded together to form a local government under that name but it did not survive into federalism until 1955 when it merged with several other townships into Schenectady-Troy Metro Area council Consolidated Government District #1 (SCTMD#1). As a result of this merger two seats went away from Schenectady City Council but only one seat moved from Troy City Hall onto SCTMD#1's new body which increased representation for residents here by 12%. The remnants of village life can still be seen today in areas such as grocery storesCHAIN MUSIC HALL & GAS STATION etc., which are close enoughto walk or take public transportation without feeling too far away
