The history of Ogdensburg dates back to 1814 when a group of farmers set up camp on the banks of the Susquehanna River within present-day Ogdensburg. They named their settlement after General Lewis Cass (1788-1863), who had commanded American forces during the War for Independence and who later served as Secretary of State under President James K. Polk (1845-1849). In 1824, General John Armstrong arrived with 3,000 men and erected a stockade around what became known as Armstrong's Landing. The first school in Ogdensburg was built in 1829 by one of its early settlers, Daniel Dennison. A post office was established in 1830 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1865 due to heavy competition from other towns in the area. According to the 2010 census, there are 1,857 people living in Ogdensburgh Township including 566 households and 293 families residing within unincorporated areas surrounding the township boundaries; these areas have a total population of 2,619 residents according to 2011 Census data. Of note are two villages/townships: Oneonta and Romeoville which also form part of Oneonta Micropolitan Statistical Area; both villages had populations greater than 1,000 inhabitants as reported by their respective censuses between 2000 and 2010 inclusive but were not included within Ogdensburgh Township limits bounds; nonetheless they maintain strong economic ties with the township while enjoying individual autonomy within their own communities Ogdensburgh’s rich agricultural history can be traced back to pioneer days when land along both sides of Route 9 near where present day Highway 9 crosses Amtrak tracks were available for purchase or donation towards cultivation by those interested or able theretofore To further attest this period’s importance an Agricultural Museum has been constructed adjacent to Ulster County Community College that provides historical information about local agriculture through exhibits on various types Cattle & Hog Farmingstead Manor Mill - now closed operations mill dating from 1692 Winthrop Rd., current home for hamlet Church Rd.; 17th St./Romeoville Trunk Road: current home for Village Hall #1 (now Roman Catholic Church) Dutch Reformed EpiscopalChurch built circa 1800 on lot donated by Esther Jansen & her husband Cornelius Van Neste which still stands today In 1881 United States Senator Abraham Lincoln visited village on his way from Buffalo skulls he had just collected from all over western New York—this event helped jump start development process inside villagelimits

Ogdensburg, New York is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. The town is named after General James Otis and his wife Oria (née Gottschalk). It was established in 1810 as a village on the north side of the Oswego River. The first settlers were French Canadian refugees who had fled to New York during the American Revolution. In 1812, they founded a village on the east side of the river. The next year, they changed the name to Ogdensburg after General James Otis and his wife Oria Gottschalk. They were pioneers in what is now Schuyler County and helped create what is now Buffalo Township. In 1833, they bought 7 acres (2 km²) of land on which they erected a small log cabin called "The Gables." That same year, they started making cheese from milk cows and selling it to local merchants. In 1840-41, Governor Nelson Aukerman offered $5 for each lot sold in Ogdensburg Township to make it an incorporated village; but no one took him up on it because he wanted to keep everything open to Native Americans who still lived there. He finally did this in 1848 when he created Niagara Falls as part of Niagara County and made Ogdensburg an annoyance because so much cheese was being made here that it interfered with production at Niagara Falls. After years of lobbying by residents and farmers throughout Schuyler County and Ontario County adjacent to Ogdensburg Village proper, in 1865-66 the NY legislature authorized incorporation into Schuyler County without any vote by the people—an event known as Town Hall Day! Incorporation ceremonies were held April 12th 1865 at which time Mayor Isaac Brouwer pronounced: "We constitute ourselves an entity under this charter...and order may be given...to erect our meeting house." That same year also saw another milestone for Ogdensburgh when Second Lieutenant Rufus Fenton became its first postmaster general! He served until 1870 when he resigned over differences with county supervisors about mail service within the new community—a dispute that continues today! In 1867-68 Andrew Winton built a small mill southwest of town near present day Miller Road; however his venture failed due to competition from larger mills downstream nearby! By 1870 most inhabitants had moved away or died including many of those responsible for founding/building/leading both towns – all except two men who continued farming until their deaths: Hugh Condon (1871-1946) & John Purdy (1875-1945). Today only one house remains standing from those early days…the old Gables Cabin!
