Ogdensburg, New York is a small town in central New York, United States. The population was 3,471 at the 2010 census. The village of Ogdensburg was incorporated in 1887. It is part of the Syracuse, NY-New Rochelle, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The township of Ogdensburg was laid out in 1784 by Nicholas de Montague and named for General James Ogden, 1st Baron Dunmore who had been defeated by British forces near the present day village of Ogdensburg on July 20th, 1782. At the time it included all that now makes up the town of Ogdensburg and most of what is today's village of Northumberland. In 1887, when Syracuse County was formed from parts of Clinton and Onondaga counties, Ogdensburgh became one of its first townships. The courthouse located on Main Street in downtown Ogdensburgh still stands as does many other buildings from that era including a post office which opened on October 14th, 1892. Today there are few reminders left from our pioneer days such as frontier stores and cabinetry made from logs salvaged during those early years while water lines ran six miles long just to get to these small communities with their sawmills manufacturing lumber for homes and businesses back then! There were also three churches; First Presbyterian (1893), Second Presbyterian (1910), and Methodist Episcopal (1929). One can only speculate about what went through people's minds when they first encountered this remote outpost on Route 9 east off I-8 some 350 miles south Of their home city! Today most everyone knows about either Cherokee or Seneca Lake but very little about our early pioneers who created such an amazing community hereabouts!

On October 20, 1812, the first resolution of the New York State Legislature was passed in response to the War of 1812. It approved a plan by General Robert E. Lee to annex Upper Canada as part of a larger strategy to expand American territory. The resolution also called for military action against Canada if that country did not agree to become an American state. The political and military situation in North America during this time was complex and fluid; there were no clear boundaries between U.S. territories and Canadian provinces except for the fact that some areas were considered part of Quebec while others were in Ontario. There was also contention over who had jurisdiction over what land within these boundaries: Americans or British subjects? On December 12, 1813, after much debate, the United States Constitution was ratified and Upper Canada became a new U.S. state with its own government, legislature, and judiciary.
