Ogdensburg, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It was founded by the Dutch in 1714 and has since been part of the United States. Ogdensburg is located on the Mohawk River, about 30 miles east of Albany. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. The history of Ogdensburg goes back to 1664 when Nicholas Oudolfsen settled here with his family from Utrecht, Netherlands. In 1714, the Dutch created a new township called "Ogdensburgh" in what is now northeast corner of Townshend and Cedar Streets in downtown Ogdensburg. The first settler named Jameson arrived in 1718 and he named his tract of land after George Washington, who had just become Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne discovered gold near present day Ogdensburgh while exploring for mines in what is now Erie County. This led to huge rushes of people into this area which soon became known as "Goldsboro". The townships west of Gansevoort were annexed to Syracuse by order of President James Kieft on December 3, 1815; however they retained their own separate government until 1830 when they all joined together as one township under the jurisdiction of Albany Township supreme court commissioner John Paulding (1796-1860). In 1835 Buffalo found gold again at Farnham Creek and this led to another rush; however only a few families moved into town because there was still no money for them to buy land or build homes. When it came time for school districts in upstate New York to be established following statehood in November 1861, Oakland School District #1 included both parts of present day Ogdensburgh within its boundaries; however that district's predecessor – Townsend School District #1 – continued operations within its own boundaries until 1922 when it merged with Rochester School District #2 creating today's largest school district with over 120 schools serving students from seven villages: Amherst Center (Amherst), Baldwinsville (Baldwinsville), Canandaigua Falls (Canandaigua Falls), East Aurora (East Aurora), Ithaca (Ithaca), North Ossining (North Ossining) and Seneca Lake/Lake Nymphs Beach/Huguenau Beach/. In 1923 also two other school districts were formed: One along US Route 61 called South Ossining School District #2 which extended from Suffern northward including parts now part Of Schenectady County; while another along NY Route 246 called Westport School District #3 which served areas now part Of Monroe County including most notably Onondaga County’s Watkins Glen area where today’s Niagara Falls operates as an industrial center]. After World War II many residents left for jobs overseas or left altogether due to high costof living or lack thereof outside the city limits; however some stay behind through out economic times by opening local businesses such as restaurants etc.]
