Ogdensburg, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 5,754 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Ogdensburgh and his wife Maria. The name comes from "onga", an Iroquois word meaning "a place where deer can be killed." In 1829, Ferdinand Andresen donated land to the town for a church and school. In 1830, John Purdy bought 1/4 acres of land in Ogdensburgh for $1 per acre. In 1838, Augustus Kossuth donated another two acres to the town. In 1840, George Stephenson donated land east of Main Street to the town for a courthouse and jail. The first store opened in 1842 on this site. A post office called Ogdensburgh was established in 1845; it closed in 1918 due to mail losses caused by World War I. In 1865, the Erie Canal was completed through central New York; as a result, trade increased along its length and Ogdensburgh became known as "the canal city". In 1870–71, Elisha Otis erected a large sawmill on Main Street which continued operation until it burned down in 1896; this event helped spur development along Main Street which now includes several restaurants and bars as well as numerous homes dating back to when the mill operated.- On July 10th 1860 John Fenton purchased 2 lots adjacent to what would later become Main Street from Nicholas Ogdensburgh for $2 each (laterincreasedto$5). This purchase made Fenton one of only two white men who had owned property within incorporated limits at that time.(the other being Moses Greene) On March 3rd 1861 he constructed what would become known as Fenton's Store (later renamed Monroe's Tavern), located on current day Elmira Road north of Route 9A., across from present day Westcott Elementary School.–Fenton served as Postmaster until his death on November 21st 1865.–The first school building – which still stands today – was built on lot #6 opposite lot #7 soon after completion of Schoolhouse Corner Methodist Episcopal Church., also located northwest corner Of Elmira Rd./Route 9A
