In 1814, there were only 8 settlers living here; by 1830 there were over 60 residents and by 1860 it had reached 300 people. The first post office in this area opened in 1851; it was renamed North Tonawanda in 1870 after Major General George Washington Fortescue (1772-1843), who served as commander at Niagara during the War of 1812. North Tonawanda is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up North Tonawanda was first settled by Germans and other European immigrants in 1811. In 1814, the area became part of NY Central Park when it was created as part of the governmental merger of Albany and Niagara counties. The park's namesake is Major General James Kuykendall (1795-1856), who played a key role in organizing NY Central Park and its many features including Lake Ontario Boulevard on which much of today's downtown rests. In 1825, North Tonawanda acquired land from John Dolan for $1 million after he had mortgaged his entire estate to buy it from his father-in-law Daniel Dolan Sr., one of the early settlers in what would becomeTonawanda Township. The city boundaries were established in 1827 with land acquisitions from other townships within Erie County: South Tonawanda (acquired by Niagara County), West Seneca (acquired by Fulton County), and East Seneca (acquired by Monroe County). In 1830, gold was discovered near Oswego on Long Island; this led to an increase in immigration to North Tonawandans seeking better opportunities than they could find inland. In 1840–41 there were more than 2200 German miners living hereabouts; within ten years most had drawn down their claims and migrated back home because conditions there continued to be difficult. By 1861 only a few hundred Germans remained in NorthTonawa; however, their descendants continue to make significant contributions to local culture both through entrepreneurship and service roles outside of their hometowns even into the 21st century. The economic fortunes of NorthTonawa changed dramatically during the late 19th century as manufacturing boomed throughout western New York State thanks increasingly to new technologies such as steel production using iron ore mined along Buffalo Common north of present day Niagara Falls limits due eastward underground undercutting Ski Hill operations operated by Canadian Steel Corporation starting around 1900 until 1945 when these operations ended following World War II bombings raids targeting aluminum plants nearby Also during this time several large textile mills closed or relocated away due largely to environmental factors also assisting with dramatic declines seen throughout much eastern New York State overall especially Buffalo’s garment industry although some small businesses did manage to stay open thru out those decades despite competition from larger businesses located closer unto major cities
The Town of North Tonawanda was first settled in 1814. The town was named after the Tonawanda River, which flows through it. The town was laid out by a group of settlers who were led by John Graves Simcoe. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1832, the village of North Tonawanda merged with the Village of South Tonawanda to form the new town of North Tonawanda. The growth of the town led to problems, as there wasn't enough land to accommodate everyone. This resulted in many people moving away from North Tonawanda and into other towns in upstate New York. By 1860, only about 10 people remained in thetown. In 1881, the state legislature passed a bill creating an 8-mile belt around North Tonawanda providing for agricultural purposes and resisting development by outside interests. This belt served as a buffer betweenNorthTonawaandtheoutlyingvillagesoftheTonehillValley region。 In 1916, NorthTonawa became part of Erie County when that county was created from portions of Cortland and Albany counties.
