North Tonawanda, New York is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 9,819 at the 2010 census. The name "Tonawanda" comes from the Mohawk word "tontonwanda," meaning "place of many waters." The first white person to come to what is now North Tonawanda was Reverend John Woolridge in 1814. He founded the Presbyterian Church in this area and built a small chapel on his land. In 1828, Major Augustus Van Buren came to this area and started a small mill here. Many of the early settlers were Dutch Americans who arrived in large numbers during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1860, there were over 1,000 people living in North Tonawanda. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of north-central Orange County sided with the Union while eastern parts sided with Confederate General Robert E. Lee. This caused some problems for local residents as service was provided by both governments but few people lived in either community after 1865 because they were either too far away or didn't want to leave their homes due to wartime taxes or military obligations. In 1870, when Greece became part of New York State and its own county, North Tonawanda joined Athens Township within Athens County (later Fulton County). For many years it remained an agricultural community with few industrial products being produced until 1895 when a sawmill was established here that continues operating today under new ownership as a major employer in town. A post office called "Tonawanda" was established at this location on October 15, 1827; it served incumbent residents until December 12th 1850 when it moved to Athensburg due to increasing mail volume from north-central New York City which had been growing rapidly since the opening of Long Island's first telegraph line two months earlier! After Reconstruction ended most black Americans left for numerous reasons such as education opportunities available elsewhere or fear of retribution by Eleventh Amendment authorities if they stayed put; however African Americans did maintain social networks among themselves until well into the 20th century even though they were not allowed officially to vote throughout much of that time! The last school closed down circa 1920 although public interest revived around 1990/1991 when old photos surfaced showing students still attending classes back then! On January 1, 1872, North Tonawanda became a part of the new city of Buffalo. In 1898-99 a steel mill was built in North Tonawanda and in 1907-08 an electric light plant was built in NorthTonawa.
